The regular season starts this week, as teams across the Amarillo-area gear up for an exciting 2023 campaign. Here’s 15 volleyball players to watch that will make a major impact in the Texas Panhandle.

Jordyn Gove, Randall, Outside hitter, 6-foot, Sr.

Gove shined in a huge way leading the Randall Lady Raiders to a UIL Class 4A state championship last season. The powerful outside hitter racked up every accolade as a junior grabbing the Press Pass Sports Player of the Year honor, she was a TGCA all-state selection, as well as the UIL Class 4A State Tournament MVP to go with the District 4-4A MVP. Gove ended her storybook season with 644 kills putting her over 1,000 for her career with 536 digs.

Sidney Soria, Randall, Setter, 5-9, Jr.

The very charismatic Soria blasted onto the scene in a hurry with her incredible play handing out an eye-popping 1,541 assists to go with 367 digs. In her first year on varsity, Soria nabbed TGCA all-state honors, was the Press Pass Sports Newcomer of the Year and was named the District 4-4A Setter of the Year.

Abby Howell, Bushland, Outside hitter, 5-10, Sr.

After the loss of a tremendous senior class, Howell’s role not only turns to leader but also a valuable member on the outside for head coach Jason Culpepper and the always dangerous Lady Falcons. As a junior, Howell was named as a first-team all-district selection knocking down 225 kills with 20 blocks.

Sienna Cavalier, Amarillo High, Outside hitter, 5-7, Jr.

The reigning District 3-5A Newcomer of the Year came into her own as a sophomore helping lead the Lady Sandies to the third round of the UIL Class 5A playoffs. Cavalier looks to capitalize on a sophomore season that saw 348 kills with 319 digs.

Saphina Stanley, Tascosa, Outside hitter, 5-7, Jr.

Stanley was an outstanding asset for the Tascosa Lady Rebels in 2022 especially on the offensive side of the ball. Stanley earned District 3-5A Offensive Player of the Year thanks to hammering down 454 kills with 21 blocks.

Jayli Franklin, West Plains, Outside hitter, 5-10, Sr.

Franklin was a bright spot for a West Plains team that saw a historic first season earning 32 wins while going three rounds deep in the UIL Class 4A playoffs. Franklin made life difficult for defenders finishing her junior year with 395 kills and 180 digs to earn District 4-4A first-team honors.

Mackenzie Sims, Bushland, Setter, 5-7, Jr.

Like her sisters, Jalee, and Ansley before her, Mackenzie carries the Sims name proudly in volleyball. Sharing the setter role last season for the state runner-up Lady Falcons, Sims dished out 551 assists with 318 digs and was named District 1-3A Setter of the Year.

London Baker, Hereford, Setter, 5-8, Jr.

Baker returns as a leader for an always very talented Hereford squad. The junior, and honorable mention all-state selection averaged 30.4 assists per match last season.

Sydnee Winfrey, Canyon, Middle blocker, 5-11, Jr.

In the line of a talented family of daughters, Sydnee isn’t any different. Winfrey made tremendous strides as a sophomore and is now ready to take that extra step as a leader on the floor for Canyon in 2023. As a sophomore, the 5-foot-11 middle blockers racked up 238 kills to go with 101 blocks.

Mercedes Ewing, Miami, Middle blocker, 6-foot, Sr.

Ewing has been a valuable asset since the beginning of her freshman season two years ago for head coach Keri Dukes. Despite only playing in 12 games due to injury last season, Ewing made the most of getting on the court with 168 kills, 102 digs and 31 blocks to earn District 1-1A MVP honors and a TGCA all-state selection.

Lilliana Rangel, Caprock, Setter, 5-5, Sr.

Caprock’s three-year letterman has become a leader with her on-court display and her versatility. Last year, Rangel handed out 623 assists, hit the floor for 243 digs, made 90 kills and added 55 aces.

McCall Sims, West Plains, Libero, 5-6, Sr.

Sims is part of a now experienced senior group that took on a major responsibility of starting a program from scratch last year. Sims did her part in that first season and then some with 606 digs and 26 aces for a Lady Wolves team that went three rounds deep in the UIL Class 4A playoffs.

Claire Fansler, Amarillo High, Middle blocker, 6-foot, Sr.

The District 3-5A first-team selection had a very solid junior campaign in the middle for the Lady Sandies finishing with a hitting percentage of .397 while totaling 90 blocks. Expect more from Fansler as a senior entering this fall.

Meredith Sanning, Tascosa, Setter, 5-5, Sr.

Sanning was all over the court for the Lady Rebels dishing out 1,184 assists to go with 284 digs and 60 aces. For her steady play last year, Sanning earned the District 3-5A Setter of the Year.

Maecie Hawthorne, Pampa, Setter, 6-1, Jr.

Hawthorne helped a Lady Harvester squad to the playoffs with her unselfish style of play by delivering 788 assists, 240 digs and 43 ace. The District 4-4A first-team selection is expected to have an even bigger role as a junior this season.
