AHS rolls into District 3-5A
The No. 6-ranked Amarillo High Lady Sandies opened up District 3-5A action in a big way thumping Palo Duro 70-21 at the PD Activity Center on Friday night.
AHS wasted little time blowing the contest wide open jumping out to a 24-4 first quarter advantage.
McKenzie Smith and Lacey Rice combined for 39 of the Lady Sandies 70 points. Smith poured in a game-high 20, followed by Rice with 19.
AHS improves to 18-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Randall also opened district on top by taming Tascosa 67-58. The Lady Raiders move to 15-9 overall and 1-0 in 3-5A. Sadie Sanchez had a game-high 21 points for Randall.
Clarendon stuns Panhandle
The first night of a full girls district schedule brought one of the biggest upsets.
District 2-2A favorite, and No. 6-ranked Panhandle was left stunned on the road falling at Clarendon, 44-30.
The Ettes, who reached the state semifinals a year ago, struggled from the floor falling behind 14-8 in a tough scoring first half. The Lady Broncos picked up the pace in the second half opening a 30-18 lead after three quarters and never looked back. Hayden Elam was sensational leading Clarendon with a game-high 19 points. Teammate Finley Cunningham added nine points.
Clarendon is now 15-12, 1-0. Panhandle drops to 16-8, 0-1.
Friday’s top performers
Borger opened District 4-4A with a 53-46 victory over Perryton. Realitee Brisco was a big reason for that win scoring 21 points.
Highland Park’s Cassie McClurg scored a game-best 24 points that helped the Lady Hornets sting River Road, 65-15.
Mercedes Harrwig of Miami kept the Lady Warriors unbeaten in district with a 24 point effort during a 60-43 home win against McLean.
The Tulia boys blasted Slaton 70-36. During the convincing win, senior Alan Garcia was tough to stop with 23 points.
The Childress boys went on the road nabbing a 55-43 victory at Idalou. Junior Lamont Nickelberry scored a team-high 16 points.
