Canadian girls clinch District 1-3A
In a highly anticipated rematch, the Canadian Lady Cats backed up their No. 1 ranking grabbing a convincing 60-41 at Bushland in a key District 1-3A showdown on Tuesday night.
Canadian locks up the district championship outright improving to 29-1 on the year and a perfect 8-0 in league play. Bushland falls to 20-7, 6-2.
In an electric atmosphere of a packed Bushland Gym, Canadian seized the momentum in the closing minutes of the second quarter. Tied 22-22, the Lady Cats went on an 8-0 run to take a 30-22 lead at halftime they’d never relinquish. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Cats iced the game outscoring the Lady Falcons 18-9 down the stretch. Sophomore guard Samantha Krehbiel poured in a game-high 14, followed by teammate, Briley Merket’s 12. Tinley Pennington started the game off hot scoring all 9 of her 11 points in the first quarter.
Amarillo High survives at Plainview
The Amarillo High Lady Sandies survived an upset bid at Plainview coming away with a gritty 44-38 win to clinch a share of the District 3-5A championship on Tuesday night.
The Lady Sandies (25-5, 8-0) can clinch the outright district title with a win at Randall on Friday. AHS has now been a part of seven straight district championships under head coach Jeff Williams.
Playing without senior foward Briley Barnes, who was out with an injury, McKenzie Smith stepped up for AHS scoring a game-high 17 points. Jada Graves and Tatyana Gaspar each added eight in the victory.
Plainview falls to third place in the league race at 16-14, 5-3.
Tuesday’s top performers
Alana Strong was stellar for Caprock dropping in 28 points to lead the Lady Longhorns past Tascosa 62-55.
Freshman Berlin Bartlett of Pampa continues her impressive season scoring 24 points as Pampa edged Perryton 41-40.
Panhandle’s Grace Sims didn’t overlook Memphis tallying 22 points in a 73-17 home victory. The Ettes host Wellington for the outright District 2-2A championship on Friday.
