Estacado survives in Canyon
The Eagles late game heroics through district play came up short against Lubbock Estacado during a heartbreaking 57-56 loss at home Friday. The Matadors sank two free-throws with less than 10 seconds to play to take a one-point lead. Canyon had one last chance on an inbound play, however, were unable to execute. The Eagles (18-11) are now tied for the District 3-4A lead with Levelland at 5-2.
Hornets get big W
The Highland Park Hornets nabbed a huge 52-49 home win against district leading Wheeler to keep themselves in the playoff mix.
Hunter Nicholas went for a game-high 19 points as Highland Park moves to 18-12 overall and 4-5 in a stout District 2-2A. The Hornets are currently a game up on Panhandle and Wellington for third place in the league standings.
Friday’s top performers
Palo Duro’s Kaje Lee and Thaddeus Udoh combined for 53 points to lead the Dons to a 90-61 rout of Lubbock Coronado. Palo Duro outscored the Mustangs, 55-24, in the second half. Lee poured in 33 points, followed by Udoh with 20.
Spearman’s Peyton Black racked up 27 points which was the difference during a 59-48 victory against Tulia. Black’s effort puts Spearman (17-13, overall, 7-6 in district) all alone for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 1-3A.
Jonah Villanueva of West Texas High scored a game-high 23 points to help the Comanches seal a playoff spot in District 1-2A with a 51-45 win against Sanford-Fritch.
Girls seeding game update
Lubbock Cooper grabbed the third-seed in District 3-5A by handling Plainview 49-31 in Dimmitt. The Palo Duro Lady Dons were then able to take the fourth and final playoff spot Saturday, with a thrilling 40-38 win against Plainview.
In District 4-4A, Dalhart dominated Dumas 55-31, to earn the top-seed. Dumas will be the No. 2-seed. Pampa knocked off Perryton for the third place spot out of District 4-4A with a 43-36 victory.
Olton took the fourth and final playoff spot out of District 3-2A, beating Bovina, 50-35.
Follett and Wildorado are both playoff boundS Follett downed Miami 49-38 for the third place spot in District 1-1A, while Wildorado snuck past Hartley, 52-51, to claim the final spot out of District 3-1A.
