The Bushland Falcons bounced back in a big way from a season-opening loss to No. 1 Brock with a 56-10 drubbing of Hereford on Friday night at Falcons Stadium.
Bushland not only gains the inaugural win of this first time meeting between the two proud programs, but it’s also the first career win for Falcons head coach Josh Reynolds.
This game was never close as Bushland exploded from the get go building a commanding 42-3 halftime lead.
Already up 14-0 after the first quarter, the Falcons continued to pour it on the Whitefaces with a 28-point second quarter.
Running back Leaford Calder showed off his speed with 34 and 12 yards. Calder also snagged two TD passes of 18 and 16 yards. By the end of the game the senior had three catches and two carries for a total of 89 yards with four total touchdowns. Quarterback Coleman Junnell had a superb showing by completing 15-of-20 passes for 196 yards with three TD passes and a rushing touchdown.
Bushland (1-1) will host No. 2-ranked Canadian (1-1) from Class 3A Division II at 7 p.m. on Friday. Hereford (1-1) tentatively has an open date.

Hawks rally late to stun Wildcats
It looked like all but a win for No. 2 Canadian but Iowa Park caught fire scoring on four straight possessions to wear down the Wildcats for a thrilling 28-21 victory Friday night at Hawks Stadium.
With Canadian being No. 2 in the state in Class 3A Division II, and Iowa Park ranked No. 10 in Class 4A Division II, no doubt this game picked up statewide attention.
The loss snaps the Wildcats 16-game regular season win streak dating back to 2018.
Canadian took over in the first half with a clicking offense and stellar defense. Quarterback Joshua Culwell broke loose on a pair of touchdown runs of 27, and 19 yards giving the Wildcats a 14-0 advantage into half.
After a Landon Smith 10 yard touchdown run in the third to make it 21-0, the Hawks turned the momentum in a hurry. Iowa Park eventually wore down Canadian as all of its scoring came in an eight minute stretch.
Running back Cirby Coheley’s second rushing touchdown and ensuing two-point pass to Kade Thomas tied the game at 21-21 with 6:29 remaining.
After a defensive stop, Coheley found Thomas over the middle for the game-winning 65-yard touchdown with 4:37 left to play.
Coheley totaled 277 offensive yards with a combined four touchdowns.
Canadian running back Hayze Hufstedler carried the ball 18 times for 91 yards.
Canadian (1-1) will try and rebound on the road at Bushland (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

River Road nabs first W of season
River Road ran its way into the win column with a hard fought 22-13 home win against Wheeler on Friday night at Wildcats Stadium.
The Wildcats wasted no time getting on the board when Elliot Brown slipped through the defense for a 70 yard touchdown only 17 seconds into the first quarter.
After a slow start to the game, Wheeler found some momentum when Heston Marshall faked a punt and completed a pass for a 27 yard gain and first down. The Mustangs went on to score on the drive cutting the deficit to 8-7.
In the second half, River Road extended its lead when QB Lance Welps scored on back-to-back drives with one coming by air and one the ground.
Brown led the Wildcats with 132 yards on 28 carries with one rushing and one receiving TD.
Welps added 91 yards rushing that included a scoring pass to Brown and a rushing touchdown.
River Road’s defense bottled up Marshall, holding the talented back to 67 yards.
River Road (1-1) stays at home to face a very good Wellington (1-0) squad at 7 p.m. Friday. The Mustangs (1-1), Wheeler welcome Quanah (1-1) to town at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Friona fends off Borger
Friona erased a 14-point first quarter deficit to pick up a clutch 27-21 road win against Borger at Bulldogs Stadium on Friday night.
Borger put up a 14-0 lead on Camden Hernandez 5-yard run, followed by a 35-yard touchdown pass from Allan Cardenas.
The Chieftains to chip away in the second quarter behind quarterback Bryan Chavira, eventually taking the lead for good in the third.
Chavira carried Friona offensively with 22 totes for 116 yards rushing and two scores.
Friona (2-0) tries to stay unbeaten when they face rival Muleshoe at 7 p.m. Friday in Muleshoe.
Borger (0-2) will look for its first win at rival Pampa at 7 p.m.

Mules break long losing streak
It was a celebration in Muleshoe as the Mules said goodbye to a lingering 13-game losing skid by routing Lamesa 42-6 at home Friday.
It was not only Muleshoe’s first taste of victory since a 28-21 win against River Road on Oct. 26, 2018.
It was also the first victory for new Mules coach Jason Richards.
Quarterback Zach Hasley was the story for Muleshoe. The gunslinger picked apart the Golden Tornadoes for 328 passing yards on 19-of-28 completions with four touchdown tosses.

Tulia uses team effort to elude Brownfield
Tulia used stellar defense, just enough offense, and a 35-yard field goal that was just enough to escape Brownfield with a 10-7 victory on Friday night.
The game came down to the final two minutes. The Cubs trailed 10-7, with the ball on the goal line, however Tulia’s defense made a stop on a 4th and 1 to secure the win.
In a game that didn’t see many points, the Hornets picked up a clutch 35-yard field goal from Kathan Valenzuela midway through the second quarter that was the eventual game-winner.
Defensively, linebacker Isacc Garcia made 16 tackles for the Hornets.
Tulia (2-0) will try and remain unbeaten at Sanford-Fritch (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Spearman stifles Sanford-Fritch
The Spearman Lynx used its speed to blow past Sanford-Fritch 48-6 at Eagles Stadium on Friday.
Spearman used its balance to rack up 435 offensive yards, holding the Eagles to 173 total yards.
Lynx quarterback Jack Wilkerson threw for 249 yards with three touchdowns, and rushed for 49 yards with a score.
Division prospect and Spearman’s multi-purpose weapon Brenen Thompson scored two touchdowns on the ground with a pair of TDs, and made three catches for 84 yards with a score.

Skyrockets ground and pound Lions
In a battle of two of the top Class 2A teams in the state, Wellington ate up New Deal on the ground on the way to a 22-14 win at Powell Field on Friday night.
Wellington, was playing its season opener at No. 3 in Division II, trailed No. 8 New Deal 7-6 at half, but quickly flipped the momentum.
On the opening play of the third quarter John Ramirez broke loose on a 73-yard touchdown, putting the Skyrockets on top 14-7.
On Wellington’s next possession, Wellington took it right at the Lions on a 40-yard drive that lasted over four minutes on eight plays that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Creighton Killian.
New Deal tried to make a late run but the Wellington defense did its part.
All 280 of the Skyrockets yards were rushing led by senior Marc Ramirez who scampered for 136 yards on 24 carries with a score. Marc also made 15 tackles on defense.
Marc’s younger brother, John, finished with 108 yards on eight carries with a TD.

Elks find win column
After a rough Week 1, Stratford sent the home fans at the newly upgraded E.L. Sam Bass Stadium happy by dominating West Texas High 38-16 on Friday night.
The Comanches struggled defending the Elks ground attack, as Stratford piled up 363 yards on the ground. Zane Burr, Alberto Guerrero and quarterback Cody Rinne all went over the century mark. Burr rushed for a team-high 133 yards with a pair of touchdowns, followed by Rinne’s 111 and two rushing TDs, and Guerrero’s 100. Rinne added 126 yards passing with another score.
Stratford (1-1) visits Lakin, Kan. at 7 p.m. Friday.

Vega dominates Battle of Oldham County
The Vega Longhorns made it six straight victories over their Oldham County rival, Boys Ranch, with a 49-0 win Friday night in Vega.
The Longhorns have a 1-2 punch with their play caller, Ryan Grawunder and leading back Riley Tiemann.
Grawunder threw for 165 yards and rushed for 74 yards, combining for five touchdowns.
Tiemman added 82 yards with three TDs.
Vega (2-0) has a showdown at Panhandle (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Sunray stays hot
Sunray made a trip traveled across state lines worth it by rolling over Hooker, Okla., 41-6 on Friday night.
Break out the Bobcats who are off to their first 2-0 start since the 2016 season.
It was a Tate Debord showcase Friday night for the Bobcats and the Bulldogs had no answer. For a second straight week the dual-threat QB led both teams in rushing, with 278 yards on 27 carries, and passing, completing 8-of-21 for 116 yards for a combined five touchdowns.
Sunray (2-0) will try and move to 3-0 when they play host to Dimmitt (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Panhandle bounces back
Panhandle rebounded from a rough season opener by going on the road and dismantling the Gruver Greyhounds in a 69-6 route Friday night at Greyhounds Stadium.
Seven different Panthers found the endzone with as they compiled an impressive 585 yards on the night. Panhandle also limited Gruver to 62 total yards.
Fullback Jayse Edwards carried the rock three times for an impressive 117 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Zion Mercer caught three passes for 107 yards with a score, and QB Landyn Hack threw for 205 yards with three TDs.
Panhandle (1-1) will get another test hosting Vega (2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Clarendon squeaks past Ralls
It wasn’t the prettiest of games, however Clarendon gained a measure of revenge by holding off Ralls 18-12 at Broncos Stadium on Friday.
Ralls had eliminated the Broncos from the playoffs last season.
The contest was close throughout with the Jackrabbits running 30 more plays than Clarendon. This one came down to the fourth quarter when Antwan Bassett punched in his second touchdown to give the Broncos an 18-12 lead with three minutes to go.
Bassett was one of eight running backs to share the load for the Broncos, who chewed up 270 team rushing yards in the victory.
Clarendon (2-0) will travel to Bovina (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Shamrock stays unbeaten
For the first time in over a decade the Shamrock Irish are 2-0 after mauling Munday 36-12 on Friday night.
The Irish jumped all over the Moguls with a 22-point first quarter. Shamrock was then able to seal the victory putting up 14 points in the final frame.
Shamrock totaled 291 of its 352 yards rushing led by Caden Peevey. The sophomore sliced and diced Munday for 120 yards on only nine carries including two scores. Teammate Sean Wright added 102 yards with two TDs.
Shamrock (2-0) hopes to stay undefeated when they host Highland Park (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Cyclones KO Chieftains
For the first time since 2017 the Memphis Cyclones are 2-0.
Memphis made that happen by rolling over Crosbyton 30-16 on Friday night.
Running back Cutter O’Neal tallied 117 yards on seven carries with two scores to lead the Cylcones.

Farwell blows out rival Bovina
A strong running attack was too much for Bovina as Farwell down its rival in a 42-6 blow out on Friday night at Steers Stadium.
In a battle of two teams 11 miles a part, the Mustangs couldn’t get a handle on Steers running back Corey Stancell. Stancell carried the ball 23 times for 140 yards and two scores. Quarterback Leefe Atkinson chipped in with 131 yards passing with a pair of touchdowns.
