After an unbeaten weekend to open the year in New Mexico last weekend, the Lady Buffs kept that momentum by going a perfect 5-0 at their WTAMU Invitational on Friday through Sunday.
WT (9-0 overall) used dominant pitching in the circle and powerful hitting to get two wins over Colorado Mesa by scores of 2-1, and 11-3, then the Lady Buffs went on to blank New Mexico Highlands two times, 4-0, and 7-0, while then downing Fort Lewis 9-4.
Heidi Vortherms was dominant in the circle for WT handcuffing Colorado Mesa and New Mexico Highlands in a pair of wins. Vortherms was near unhittable tossing two complete games, racking up a combined 25 strikeouts without giving up an earned run. At the dish, Diana Murtha had three doubles in the five games driving in three RBIs.
WT (9-0 overall) opens Lone Star Conference play at No. 18 Angelo State (8-3) in the first of a three-game series starting on Friday in San Angelo.
Buffs fall to Kingsville in LSC opener
It wasn’t the way the West Texas A&M Buffaloes baseball team wanted to open the home portion of the 2023 schedule.
The Buffs never found its footing dropping three out of four to Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Javelinas won the first two games of the series 9-5, and 9-3, before the Buffs won their only game 13-10 on Saturday. WT then lost a slugfest in the series finale by a eye-opening 24-20 score. Despite the losses, third baseman Adam Beckner led the Buffs at the plate going a combined 9-for-15 with two homers, four doubles and six RBIs.
WT moves to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the LSC. The Buffs continue league play at St. Edward’s with the first of a four-game series starting on Friday in Austin.
Amarillo College wins another series
It’s been a strong start to the inaugural season for Amarillo College. The Badgers picked up a second straight series win by taking three out of four games against Garden City Community College on Saturday and Sunday at Hodgetown.
AC swept the Saturday games by a 13-3, and 9-5 count. On Sunday, the Badgers clinched the series with an 11-5 win in the early game before falling in the night cap, 4-3.
Cooper Golden (2-0) had his second straight strong outing on the bump for the Badgers. The hard-throwing lefty set the tone in the series opener by tossing five innings, allowing three runs and racking up seven strikeouts. The big bats continued at the plate for AC as the team stacked up 16 extra-base hits. Center fielder Sydney Ward is on a tear hitting two more homers over the weekend to give him four on the year. Teammate Dayton Farrar seven total RBIs in the series including a pair of doubles.
The Badgers (4-2 overall) continue their homestand taking on Lamer Community College on Saturday and Sunday at Hodgetown.
