3 things that happened in Friday’s area round

Clarendon falls to New Deal

There will be a new UIL Class 2A state champion in 2023. After holding a strong grasp on the classification the past two seasons Clarendon – the two-time defending champions – reign came to an end at the hands of New Deal 59-46 in the area round on Friday night at West Plains High School.

Clarendon senior standout and two-time state champion forward Jmaury Davis got in second quarter foul trouble with Clarendon leading 25-20. That allowed New Deal to fight back on an 8-2 run to close the half and take a 28-27 advantage into the break. In the third quarter, the Broncos made a quick 6-0 spirt to open the quarter, however, the Lions roared the rest of the way going on a 13-0 run to take complete control. Jason Brazell led New Deal with 20 points. Davis, in his last game in a Clarendon uniform, put up 16 points.

The loss snapped Clarendon’s 15-game playoff win streak.

Canyon-Randall cruise

The No. 8-ranked Canyon Eagles and the Randall Raiders represented the Texas Panhandle very strongly in Andrews during Class 4A area round games on Friday afternoon. The Eagles soared to a 63-23 win over El Paso Bowie while Randall routed El Paso Harmony 73-48.

Canyon (29-2) took over by scoring the first 18 points in the second quarter and then blanked El Paso Bowie 14-0 in the third. Senior post player Kemper Jones had a team-high 15 points followed by his brother Kelson Jones with 10.

Randall led the entire way against Harmony and was able to build its biggest lead by the fourth quarter. Star guard K.J. Thomas poured in 20 points with teammate Devin Baccas adding 18.

Canyon (29-2) will now play Seminole (26-8) in the regional quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Rip Griffin Center at Lubbock Christian University. Randall (27-9) takes on El Paso Riverside (17-12) at 3 p.m. Tuesday back in Andrews.
