The No. 5-ranked West Texas A&M volleyball team extended their winning streak to 14 straight matches and honored the seniors in grand fashion during a sweep of Western New Mexico, 25-12, 25-11, 25-19, in a Lone Star Conference clash on Friday night at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.
The Lady Buffs 14-match win streak is the second longest in all of Division II while WTAMU also finished off their home schedule a perfect 15-0. The Lady Buffs (24-2 overall) are leading the LSC at 13-1 with two games remaining. WTAMU holds a one-game lead over Angelo State (22-4) which is 12-2 in the league.
WTAMU will hit the road to close out the regular season with games at Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International on Friday and Saturday.
During Friday’s victory, the Lady Buffs took an early lead in all three sets and maintained throughout the match.
Eight Lady Buffs hit .500 or better on the match as all twenty players were able to make an appearance. The Lady Buffs hit .346 as a team and combined for a leading 33 digs. The Lady Buffs out blocked the Mustangs nine to two with nine players getting at least one block on the board. The Lady Buffs balanced offense and defense helped push them to a sweep over the Mustangs.
Senior Torrey Miller, who reached 1,800 kills earlier in the week in a win at Cameron, led the way with seven kills on 13 attempts. Canyon graduate Bryli Contreras had eight digs and Highland Park graduate and senior Emma Patterson served up two aces.
Miller, Patterson, along with Canyon graduate Carly Evetts, Amarillo High graduate Piper Warren and Kelsey Carpenter were all honored for Senior Night.
