Zurri Zamora, Tascosa wrestling, Sr.
On the mat: Zamora left no doubt she was getting back to the UIL Class 5A state meet by wiping the field of competition off the mat during the Region I-5A wrestling tournament last weekend at West Texas A&M.
Zamora went 4-0 at the regional meet to win her second straight Region I-5A championship in the 100-pound division. Zamora improves to 34-0 on the year and now sets her eyes toward a third straight trip to the state meet in Cypress on Friday and Saturday. Zamora has a goal of winning her first ever state championship after finishing state runner-up the past two years.
Coach Joe Stafford: “Zurri has had an unbelievable season. After last year, she was anxious to get on the mat and prove herself and get back to work to get back to state. She wrestlers year around and she just can’t get enough of it. She has spoiled us here at Tascosa with her work ethic and the type of athlete she is. She’s an accomplished wrestler and she’s polished her skills, but I love that she stays focused on the goal. It’s going to be exciting to watch her at state one more time.”
Zamora: “It was great to win another regional championship but that’s not the end goal for me. I’m ready to get back to state and this time win a gold medal. I put a lot of time into wrestling. I do this year around and it’s my life and I would love to end my high school career as a state champion. I feel I’ve put the work in on the mat and improved and I’m just ready to get to state and compete and see what happens.”
