Charley Wilbur, Wellington basketball, Sr.
On the Court: Wilbur had a monster three games that lifted the Wellington Lady Skyrockets to their first ever UIL state tournament appearance. In three wins over Vega, New Home and Farwell, Wilbur averaged 21.3 points over that span.
Wilbur started last Tuesday in a victory against Vega in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals with 17 points, then followed that with a 27-point game during a victory against New Home in a Region I-2A semifinal. In the regional championship on Saturday against Farwell, Wilbur once again was clutch pouring in 20 points.
On the season, the senior and one of the leaders for the Lady Skyrockets is averaging 13.4 points a night with 4.6 boards and three assists.
Coach Cade Brown: “Charley was big time for us all last week. She really came through when we needed her and it’s just a testament to the DNA of this team. She has been healthy all season and playing with a lot of confidence. You can see all the work she’s putting in paying off and she is so much fun in practice. She’s just a great person that makes people laugh and she does all the right things.”
Wilbur: “This is such an exciting feeling to be going to state. This entire team has worked their butts off to get here and it has finally happened for us. I just think for myself when I hit the floor each night it’s a mindset of having a good game. The team needed me to step up last week and they needed the points, and I was able to do that for them. I’m feeling really confident right now in myself and this team and we just can’t wait to see what we can do at state.”
