For the fifth time in school history and the second time since 2021, the Amarillo High Lady Sandies golf team are Region I-5A champions.

The Lady Sandies dominated the competition on Wednesday and Thursday at the Lakeridge Country Club in Lubbock firing a 36-hole total of 609 to beat second place Argyle (638) by 29 strokes.

AHS shot an opening team round of 300 on Wednesday and then overcame very cold and windy conditions to shoot a 309 on Thursday.

“This is awesome,” AHS head coach Skyler Walden said. “It shows how hard this team works and the character they all have. Even though golf is an individual sport, they all care about each other and play as a team. This means a ton to the program. What’s great is we all work together and are all thrilled and happy for one another.”

Charlee Thacker and Addi Britten paced the Lady Sandies with two strong performances. In fact, the two tied for second individually after 36-holes and had to go to a playoff against each other for a silver medal. Thacker went on to win that playoff hole earning the silver while Britten won the bronze medal.

Thacker posted a two-day score of 72-76 for a 148 total. Britten was equally impressive shooting 74 both days for a 148. Teammate Tyler Held fired a 74 on Wednesday with an 80 on Thursday for a 36-hole tally of 154 with McKenna Montoya (80-79 – 159) and Christi Jones (87-90) rounding out the team.

AHS was so dominant during district; the Lady Sandies took two teams to the regional tournament. The AHS Gold team ended up placing ninth overall with a 36-hole round of 743.
