Randall rolls over Irvin

Things just keep on rolling for the Randall Raiders with no signs of slowing down now.

The Raiders extended their winning streak to 19 straight games in most convincing fashion against El Paso Irvin in the area round playoffs. Randall scored a series sweep for the second straight week, with a pair of five-inning 10-run mercy rule wins, winning 11-0 on Thursday and 11-1 on Friday at Seminole.

Next week, Randall (24-9) will face Seminole (25-10) in the region quarterfinals in what figures to be a highly competitive showdown. The first game of the best-of-three series will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Randall, with game two at 7 p.m. Friday in Seminole and game three, if necessary, at 4 p.m. Saturday in Plainview.

The Raiders were never seriously threatened in either game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first game on a two-run single by Dylan Ray in the top of the first. Irvin (8-25) hardly helped itself by committing seven errors.

On the mound, Gio Miranda, Derik Arenas, Adam Trevino and Justin Gallardo combined to give up one hit in five innings.

Randall didn’t waste any time in the second game either, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first. Breken Melton’s two-run single was the big hit.

Pitching lifts West Plains to another sweep

West Plains continued to make history thanks to another stellar pitching series against El Paso Riverside.

After winning the first playoff series in school history against Midland Greenwood a week earlier, the Wolves used Greenwood’s field in the area round to almost duplicate that feat. They again allowed only one run in two games, beating Riverside 2-0 on Thursday and 2-1 on Friday to advance.

Left-hander Bryton Bertrand was dominant for West Plains (28-6) in the first game, giving up two hits and striking out nine in a complete-game victory. He got all the help he needed when West Plains scored an unearned run in the top of the third and added an insurance run in the seventh.

Game two was more of the same but even more tense. The Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the third and Riverside (21-8-2) scored in the sixth, eventually forcing extra innings. West Plains scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Ethan Bentley pitched seven stellar innings for the Wolves, but Julyen Aguilera pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.

Canyon wins twice Friday to set up CISD showdown

Canyon won a pair of games in very different fashion Friday in Seminole against Clint to set up a historic showdown.

The Eagles needed 10 innings to win the first game 3-2, and carried all that momentum into the second game, rolling to a 13-1 win in five innings to complete the sweep. That sets up an all-Canyon ISD series in the region quarterfinals, as Canyon (25-7-1) will play West Plains next week.

Clint (19-11) led 2-1 going into the top of the seventh inning and was three outs from taking a 1-0 series lead. However, Noah Sanchez singled home a run to tie it and send it to extra innings.

It stayed that way until the 10th, when Sam Johnson’s single brought home the eventual winning run. Bayler Schilling, who pitched the final four innings in relief, slammed the door in the bottom of the inning to pick up the win.

Clint actually scored in the top of the first of the second game to take a 1-0 lead, but after that it was all Canyon. In the bottom of the inning, Jacob Burris belted a two-run double to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Canyon put things away with nine runs in the second, as winning pitcher Christian McGuire had the big hit with a two-run single.

Class 3A

Bushland falls to Littlefield in one-game playoff

After dominating the regular season like no other team in the Panhandle, the Bushland Falcons saw things crash to a halt Friday.

In a one-game playoff against Littlefield at Plainview’s Wilder Field, Bushland lost control of the game as the Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the sixth and held on for a 7-4 victory to end Bushland’s season. The Falcons finished the year 25-3-1.

Bushland trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead. It stayed that way until the sixth, when Littlefield (13-10) struck for five runs, with Major McNeese’s two-run single providing the big blow.

Stratton Molloy drove in two runs for the Falcons.

Class 2A

Clarendon takes down Sudan 

The Clarendon Broncos are still alive thanks to big wins over Sudan in the Class 2A area round on Thursday and Friday in Floydada.

The Broncos took nine innings to get past the Hornets in the opener 11-10 then dominated the second game to complete the sweep 9-2.

Clarendon (18-1-2) advances to the regional quarterfinals to battle Ropesville (22-6) at a time and place to be determined.

In Thursday’s first game against Sudan, the Hornets plated five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game up 9-9. After Sudan took a 10-9 lead in the top of the eighth Clarendon was able to force another inning when Jared Musick scored off a fielding error.

The Broncos were able to get the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a Harrison Howard game-winning single scoring Easton Frausto.

The second game was far less dramatic. Clarendon opened up a 6-1 lead thanks to a four-run fourth inning and never looked back. Frausto did the damage going 2-for-5 with a triple finishing with two RBIs. Howard was also 2-for-5 with a triple of his own for two runs driven in.

Class 1A

Nazareth survives Borden County to advance 

The three-time Region I champion is still well alive in the UIL playoffs with a hard-earned sweep of Borden County in the regional quarterfinal round on Friday night at Lubbock Christian High School.

The Swifts were tested by the Coyotes but managed to pull out a 6-4 win in Game 1, and a thrilling 12-11 victory to close out the series.

Nazareth (13-4) is headed back to the regional quarterfinals for a showdown with Morton (10-3) at a time and place to be determined.

In the first game Friday, Nazareth scored all six of its runs in the top of the fourth inning to secure a win. Breck Proctor went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and threw five innings allowing three runs with four strikeouts.

In the night cap, the Swifts found themselves down 9-8 heading into the bottom of the sixth. With a Game 3 looming, Nazareth stepped up scoring four runs in that sixth inning highlighted on RBI singles by Will Young and Dayne Schulte.

Borden County tried to comeback in the top of the seventh with two runs cutting the deficit to 12-11, however, pitcher Zane Schulte got a ground out to end the contest.
