THURSDAY’S GAMES

District 2-5A Division I

Lubbock Coronado (2-6, 1-3) at Amarillo High (3-3, 2-1), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
The Sandies had the week off and have a huge carrot awaiting with a win – clinching a playoff berth. At times, Coronado looks like a 6-2 team not a 2-6 team. Sandies score points like crazy and give up points like crazy. Welcome to the playoffs AHS … AHS 48, Coronado 35.

District 2-4A Division I

Pampa (2-5, 0-2) at Canyon (4-3, 0-2), 7 p.m. Happy State Bank Stadium
It’s not stretching it to call this a must-win game for both teams, and with only two weeks left in the regular season, the loser is likely out of the playoff picture. Both teams are in this position thanks to lopsided losses last week. Neither team showed much offensively last week, but Canyon had been showing some consistency running the ball most of the season prior to losing at Dumas. Pampa’s best hope is not to fall too far behind early and hope the defense can make some early stops. However, homefield and more experience give the Eagles the edge and their first district victory to keep postseason hopes alive. … Canyon 35, Pampa 13.

District 5-1A Division I

Valley (2-5, 1-0) at Silverton (2-6, 0-2), 7:30 p.m.
A win by Valley puts them in a great spot to capture a playoff spot with big games ahead with Petersburg and Spur. The Patriots are big favorites, but Zaden Ortiz won’t let Valley pull away until late. … Valley 54, Silverton 32.

District 2-1A Division II

Paducah (4-2, 1-0) at Patton Springs (2-6, 0-2), 7:30 p.m.
This one is simply a mismatch. Darren Mackey and Ethan Garibaldi won’t be stopped by the Rangers. … Paducah 60, Patton Springs 8.

FRIDAY’S GAMES

District 2-5A Division I

Lubbock High (3-4, 0-3) at Caprock (1-6, 0-3), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
The Rock let one slip away at Lubbock Coronado last week seeing a 23-point lead go kaput in the second half. That lead will hold up this week. … Caprock 35, Lubbock High 14.

Tascosa (3-4, 2-1) at Abilene High (6-2, 4-0), 7 p.m., Shotwell Stadium, Abilene
Oh man, the Rebs stinging from giving 56 in that eye-opening loss to Monterey last week. Abilene remains the team to beat in this district averaging 64 points a game in four district wins. Tascosa plays much better on the road than at home this year but Abilene QB Brayden Henry is a dual threat like no other in this district. … Abilene 60, Tascosa 40.

District 2-5A Division II

Palo Duro (3-4, 0-3) at Plainview (3-4, 1-2), 7 p.m., Greg Sherwood Memorial Stadium, Plainview
The Dons played physical, with grit and were never out of the game in the loss to talented Lubbock Cooper. If PD wants a taste of the playoffs in its future this is a must win. The Dons remain hungry. … Palo Duro 27, Plainview 17.

Abilene Cooper (2-6, 1-3) at Wichita Falls Legacy (0-7 p.m., 0-3), Memorial Stadium, Wichita Falls
Cooper might be the best 2-6 team in Texas. … Cooper 42, Legacy 14.

Wichita Falls Memorial (5-2, 2-1) at Lubbock Cooper (7-1, 4-0), 7 p.m., Pirate Stadium at First United Park, Lubbock
Game of the night in this district. If Cooper wants a district title it has to fend off a motivated Memorial squad fuming from the tough loss last week to Wylie. Cooper is one stout and physical team with a DI kicker named Cub. This one is worth your time. … Cooper 31, Memorial 28.

– Lance Lahnert
Last week: 4-2 (.666)
Season: 27-5 (.843)

District 2-4A Division I

West Plains (4-3, 2-0) vs. Randall (7-0, 2-0), 7 p.m. Friday, Happy State Bank Stadium
Less than 24 hours after Pampa-Canyon, Happy State hosts an even more crucial showdown which is the most anticipated metro game of the season. The winner takes sole possession of the district lead and the inside track on the first 2-4A DI playoff berth. Oh, and it’s the first gridiron showdown between the two schools since West Plains opened two years ago, and a huge chunk of athletes at that school used to go to Randall. That hasn’t seemed to hurt the Raiders yet, as their unbeaten record indicates. In a classic tale of the upstart vs. the establishment, experience in these kinds of games favors the establishment. … Randall 24, West Plains 21.

Dumas (3-4, 1-1) at Hereford (5-2, 1-1), 7 p.m. Friday
In what’s a perfect symmetry in district, the winner of this game will remain in the top half of the district standings, tied with the West Plains-Randall loser for second place, and the loser will be tied for fourth with the Pampa-Canyon winner. Dumas got a much-needed win over Canyon last week and Hereford lost a heartbreaker at Randall, being stopped on two end zone incompletions to end the game. This should be entertaining with two excellent underclassman quarterbacks, Colton Mills of Dumas and Hereford’s Kalub Ramirez. Homefield gives Hereford the edge. … Hereford 34, Dumas 28.

District 2-4A Division II

Perryton (2-6, 0-2) at Levelland (4-3, 0-1), 7 p.m. Friday
There’s a heightened sense of urgency here as both teams are looking for their first district win and the loser will likely need a lot of help to reach the playoffs. Perryton was routed at home by district leader Lubbock Estacado last week while Levelland drew the district’s open date. Winning on the road, especially for a district game as far away as this, would seem like a tall order for Perryton, but quarterback Cooper Schilling has been a productive dual threat for the Rangers, and he’ll make enough of a difference for a Perryton win. … Perryton 28, Levelland 25.

Borger (3-4, 1-0) at Lubbock Estacado (4-4, 2-0), 7 p.m. Friday
This one’s for sole possession of the district lead, as Borger made an impressive district debut last week by routing Lubbock-Cooper Liberty, as Ryler Moreno and Tyler Brooks showed big play ability in a 54-23 victory. That was a big statement, but the Bulldogs will take a step up this week against Estacado on the road. They’ll need a similar effort to pull this one out. It figures to be competitive, but even much-improved Borger will have a hard time dealing with the Matadors on their home turf in fighting for the district lead. … Estacado 30, Borger 21.

– Lee Passmore
Last Week: 2-3 (.400)
Season: 23-16 (.590)

District 1-3A Division I

Bushland (7-0, 0-0) at Shallowater (5-2, 0-0), 7 p.m.
This has built into quite the rivalry over the past few years. Both teams have handed each other difficult losses and traded district championships. Shallowater has the size up front to create problems for the Falcons defense. It will be up to the Bushland offense to make plays. … Bushland 29, Shallowater 22.

River Road (4-3, 0-0) at Dalhart (6-1, 0-0), 7 p.m.
River Road head coach Bryan Welps and Dalhart head coach Joey Read are close friends which always turns this battle into a fun rivalry game. The Wildcats have some momentum thanks to two thrilling wins to close out non-district. Despite not having QB Kyler Read, the Golden Wolves have carried on the momentum of a great season. … Dalhart 42, River Road 16.

District 1-3A Division II

Tulia (3-5, 1-1) at Canadian (4-3, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Canadian looked like the Wildcat of old blasting Friona last week. If the offense gets another fast start against the Hornets, we could see the same result. … Canadian 48, Tulia 14.

Childress (4-4, 2-0) at Dimmitt (2-5, 0-1), 7 p.m.
In this battle of Bobcats, Childress has been playing lights out since district play rolled around. Don’t expect a long road trip to change that. … Childress 45, Dimmitt 13.

District 2-3A Division II

Muleshoe (6-2, 2-0) at Slaton (5-2, 0-1), 7 p.m.
It’s been quite the turnaround for the Tigers under former Clarendon head coach Clink Conkin. With that being said, Muleshoe’s offense is explosive and hard to stop once it gets rolling. … Muleshoe 53, Slaton 35.

Idalou (5-2, 1-0) at Littlefield (5-3, 1-1), 7 p.m.
The Wildcats march on unbeaten in district in this old rivalry game. … Idalou 42, Littlefield 21.

– Kale Steed
Last Week: 5-0 (1.000)
Season: 41-9 (.820)

District 1-2A Division I

Panhandle (7-0, 2-0) at Sunray (7-0, 2-0), 7 p.m.
Here we go. The game we’ve all had circled for several weeks. Two powerhouses bringing state-wide attention to the Texas Panhandle in this battle of top-ranked Division I teams. Both have looked like world beaters, both are extremely talented in all three phases of the game, and both showcase outstanding QB play. What’s not to love about this matchup that will have a standing room only crowd at Bobcats Stadium. Get there early and give me Sunray in a nailbiter. … Sunray 30, Panhandle 28.

Highland Park (3-4, 0-2) at Spearman (2-5, 1-1), 7 p.m.
The Lynx make it two wins in a row out muscling the Hornets in the end. … Spearman 40, Highland Park 23.

Sanford-Fritch (1-6, 0-2) at West Texas High (5-2, 1-1), 7 p.m.
QB Cayde Winters and the Comanches bounce back after a loss last week to Panhandle. … WT High 52, Fritch 12.

District 1-2A Division II

Bovina (2-5, 0-2) at Stratford (3-3, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Coming off a bye week, the Elks are going to make life rough for the Mustangs who are making a long road trip. … Stratford 47, Bovina 8.

Vega (1-5, 0-1) at Gruver (8-0, 2-0), 7 p.m.
A win clinches a share of the district title for the Greyhounds. It also keeps Gruver unbeaten on the year. … Gruver 41, Vega 16.

District 5-2A Division II

Clarendon (0-7, 0-2) at Wheeler (6-1, 2-0), 7 p.m.
The Mustangs haven’t given up a point in the past four games. It will be interesting to see if that streak continues. … Wheeler 50, Clarendon 12.

Wellington (5-2, 2-0) at Shamrock (5-2, 2-0), 7 p.m.
QB Philip Cook is good enough to cause the Skyrockets some headaches, but overall Wellington has too many weapons. … Wellington 38, Shamrock 14.

Memphis (1-5, 0-2) at Quanah (0-7, 0-2), 7 p.m.
Let’s take Memphis for a district win. The Cyclones offense has come a long way and continue to improve. … Memphis 23, Quanah 13.

– Kale Steed
Last Week: 8-0 (1.000)
Season: 49-9 (.844)

District 1-1A Division I

Boys Ranch (0-8, 0-2) at Booker (6-1, 1-0), 7 p.m.
In last week’s loss to Claude, the Roughriders hung tough for a half before falling to a strong running game. This week it’s reversed as the Kiowas have one of the best passing games in the area which will pose a tough task for the Roughrider secondary. … Booker 66, Boys Ranch 13.

Wildorado (4-2, 1-0) at Claude (5-3, 1-1), 7 p.m.
A playoff spot may be on the line and this game shouldn’t disappoint. The running attack for Claude will be tough to stop while Wildorado’s passing attack could equal a problem. Wildorado showed some good defense last week, but it just won’t be enough to get the win. … Claude 68 Wildorado 62.

District 2-1A Division I

Happy (6-1, 1-0) at Springlake-Earth (4-3, 2-0), 7 p.m.
This is viewed as the best game in Six-Man throughout the state as the Wolverines were impressive in their win over Nazareth last week. This will be a physical, hard-fought battle as both teams will try to exert their will on the other. The Cowboys won the first matchup 60-34 but that game was tied midway through the third. … Happy 54, Springlake-Earth 46.

District 5-1A Division I

Petersburg (4-4, 2-0) at Spur (7-0, 1-0), 7 p.m.
A very intriguing matchup as the Bulldogs look to be the class of this district but Petersburg has a win over Springlake-Earth and played Motley County tough. The Buffaloes will give Spur their best shot, but the one-two combo of Josh Ortiz and Ace Walker will be too much to overcome. … Spur 52, Petersburg 28.

District 1-1A Division I

Follett (5-3, 2-0) at Miami (5-2, 0-0), 7 p.m.
Two weeks ago, this looked like a great matchup with the way the Warriors were playing.  However, injuries to key players and an unexpected loss of another player makes this a tough matchup for the Chieftains. Follett has things clicking as the ground game has dialed it up. David Meeks will be too much for the Warriors to handle. … Follett 58, Miami 24.

Lefors (1-6, 0-1) at Groom (4-4, 0-1), 7 p.m.
An up and down season for the Tigers points back up as Lefors has struggled all season.  Greyson Peet and Trayson Corley will put up big numbers for the Tigers. … Groom 60, Lefors 12.

District 2-1A Division II

Hedley (1-7, 1-1) at Motley County (7-0, 1-0), 7:30 p.m.
After getting their first win of the season last week, the Owls are feeling good, but they drew the wrong opponent this week to try and extend that winning streak. … Motley County 66, Hedley 13.

Non-district

Christ The King (5-2) at San Jacinto Christian Academy (2-5), 5 p.m. Rick Klein Park
San Jacinto has played a solid schedule so the record is a bit misleading, but the road team will have a little too much in this one. … Christ The King 46, SJCA 38.

Holy Cross Catholic Academy (3-3) at Plainview Classical (0-3), 7 p.m.
A win in this one would guarantee no worse than a .500 record for the Mustangs which would equal their record from 2010. A win this week and next against PCHEA would be their first winning season since 2011. That’s motivation enough for Holy Cross to take this one going away. … Holy Cross Catholic Academy 52, Plainview Classical 6.
