The West Texas A&M Lady Buff volleyball team went wire-to-wire completing the Lone Star Conference schedule undefeated for the 16th time in program history while capturing their prestigious 22nd LSC regular season title overall Saturday afternoon.
The No. 6-ranked Lady Buffs were pushed by Texas Woman’s but were able to come away with a hard fought 25-20, 29-27, 25-23 sweep defending the home floor at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.
WTAMU ends the regular season on an incredible 17-game win streak as they head into the LSC Tournament as the No. 1-seed with an overall mark 23-3 overall finishing conference play a perfect 16-0.
The Lady Buffs will host the LSC Tournament which begins Thursday.
Friday’s matchÂ
West Texas A&M actually clinched a share of the LSC title beating Midwestern State on Friday night with a 25-16, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, four-set victory to celebrate Senior Night.
WTAMU improved to a remarkable 43-1 all-time against the Mustangs and have won the last eight meetings.
Emma Becker set the tone for the Lady Buffs with 17 kills on 28 swings with just four errors for an attack percentage of .464 to go along with two digs and four blocks.
Kaycee Cavanaugh contributed 11 kills and nine digs while Ainsley Malis dished out a team-high 27 assists with Canyon graduate Bryli Contreras leading the way in the back row with 22 digs and a pair of aces.
The Lady Buffs registered 58 kills on 141 swings with 18 errors to hit .284 as a team with 50 assists, eight aces, 53 digs and 10 blocks. Midwestern State finished the match with 52 kills on 138 attempts with 25 attack errors to hit .196 as a team with 51 assists, no aces, 55 digs and five blocks.
Saturday’s matchÂ
WTAMU completed an unbeaten schedule getting the sweep of Texas Woman’s in the regular season finale.
The Lady Buffs are now 53-8 all-time against the Pioneers with a 28-2 mark in Canyon.
West Texas A&M is now 53-8 all-time against the Pioneers in a series that dates back to 1980, TWU is 2-28 all-time in Canyon.
Amarillo High graduate Currie Marusak finished with 10 kills on the afternoon followed by Cavanaugh’s 13. Becker was once again strong at the net with 15 kills on 27 swings and Contreras led the back row with a match-high 26 digs.
The Lady Buffs registered 58 kills on 132 attempts with 14 errors to hit .333 as a team with 50 assists, five aces, 43 digs and six blocks. Texas Woman’s had 54 kills on 120 swings with 14 errors for a .333 attack percentage with 49 assists, one ace, 46 digs and seven blocks.
