With a massive nine-team district, league play began for the girls’ side of District 3-5A on Tuesday night.
Amarillo High cruises by Palo DuroÂ
Amarillo High picked up where they left off last season by going across town and handling Palo Duro in a District 3-5A opener, 71-32, on Tuesday night.
The Lady Sandies are off to a 4-2 start to the year and more importantly 1-0 in this stacked 16-game league schedule. Palo Duro drops to 6-2 overall and 0-1.
AHS showed dominance on both ends of the floor and it started in the first quarter. The Lady Sandies built a 23-6 first quarter lead and built that advantage to 36-9 by halftime.
The second half was more of the same with the Lady Sandies outscoring the Lady Dons 35-23 in the final two quarters.
Behind balanced scoring, AHS had three players finish in double figures. Ca’Nia Mitchell had a team-high 16, followed by Bella Edwards with 14 and Tyler Held poured in 13 points.
Despite the loss, Palo Duro’s Alana Davis posted a game-high 19 points.
Tascosa pummels PlainviewÂ
Like Amarillo High, Tascosa was able to get the district season started on the right foot making a short trip to Plainview well worth resulting in a 65-45 victory Tuesday night at the Bulldogs Gym.
The Lady Rebels used a big night from junior leader Devaeh Johnson who poured in a team-high 20 points. Teammate Emily Sims followed with 15 while Nic’Kiyah Fisher tallied 11.
Plainview’s Brooke Nails led all scorers with 23 points.
Tascosa stays unbeaten on the young season at 5-0 overall and are now 1-0 in District 3-5A. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 2-2 overall and 0-1.
In the other district openers Tuesday, Lubbock High defeated Caprock 56-29 at the Caprock Activity Center. LHS (4-4) moves to 1-0 in league play while the Lady Longhorns (2-6) fall to 0-1.
Lubbock Monterey had no issues with Lubbock Coronado getting a lopsided 92-32 victory. Monterey is an impressive 13-1 to open the year and 1-0 in District 3-5A while Coronado drops to 3-7 overall and 0-1.
