WTAMU basketball teams defend home court with Lone Star Conference wins

The West Texas A&M basketball teams are underway in Lone Star Conference play and both the Buffs and Lady Buffs were able to open the home portion of the league schedule on the right foot with both program’s defending their home court in wins over Cameron and Oklahoma Christian on Thursday and Saturday at the First United Bank Center.

The Buffs opened the LSC schedule with an overtime win at Eastern New Mexico, 99-95, on Nov. 23, and carried the hot play into this week.

The No. 2-ranked Buffs poured in the points downing Cameron 91-75 on Thursday followed by an 83-64 drubbing of OCU on Saturday.

WTAMU is off to an 8-0 start to the year and are now 3-0 in LSC play.

Against the Aggies, had balanced scoring with five players reaching double-digits. Guard Ahamed Mohammed had a game-high 20 points going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and pulled down five boards.

Teammate Noah Pagotto earned a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards with Mackenzie Morgan adding 14 points going a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

WTAMU shot 47.1 percent from the floor (32-of-68, knocked down 10, 3-pointers and were 17-of-19 from the charity stripe.

During Saturday’s win against OCU, the Buffs used their talented guards to break up the scoring.

Amir McMillian had a team-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting with three steals. Pagotto had another superb outing with 15 points and Bob Griechen recorded a game-high nine rebounds.

The Buffs finished the contest shooting 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the field, and were 42.9 percent from deep (12-of-28).

Like the men’s team, the Lady Buffs were able to open the home portion of the conference schedule with a pair of wins.

Following a loss to ENMU a couple of weeks ago, WTAMU earned its first two league wins by beating Cameron 79-58, then raced by OCU 86-66 on Saturday.

The Lady Buffs are 8-2 to start the season while improving to 2-1 in the LSC.

In the win over Cameron, Amarillo High graduate and WTAMU freshman Taytum Bell led the way going for a career-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Bell also pulled down eight rebounds against the Aggies.

Teammate and Wellington graduate Kyla Kane chipped in with 12 points and Claire Graham added 10.

As a team, WTAMU went 25-of-65 (38.5 percent) from the field including 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from behind the arc. The Lady Buffs dominated the glass pulling down 51 rebounds and forced 16 turnovers.

On Saturday, the Lady Buffs continued that momentum to put away the Eagles.

Randi Harding led the way offensively for the Lady Buffs with an impressive shooting performance going 8-of-12 from the floor including 2-of-5 from behind the arc for a game-high 20 points to go along with four boards, four assists and two steals.

Kane poured in 16 points followed by Taylor Haggan with a double-double of 14 points with 10 boards.

WTAMU was on point shooting the ball finishing 32-of-62 (51.6 percent) and were 15-of-20 at the charity stripe.

Next up 

The Buffs and Lady Buffs continue LSC play with a weekend road trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville with a double header set for 1 p.m. next Sunday.
