Texline tames Wildorado 

The Texline Tornadoes have started the year on the right foot and look to have no intention of slowing down any time soon.

Texline used a fast start with an explosive second quarter to pull away from Wildorado going on to cruise to a 68-27 victory during a District 3-1A matchup at a packed Mustangs Gym on Friday night.

The Tornadoes push their overall record to 10-4 overall while moving to 2-0 in district heading into the Christmas break.

Texline opened the game hot behind Joe Clay and Hadley Crisp taking an early 13-4 lead. Even when the Mustangs started knocking down shots in the second stanza, Texline always had an answer with Clay or Crisp outscoring the Mustangs 26-18 during those eight minutes to put the game away up 39-18.

Crisp utilized his size inside to tally a team-high 17 points. Clay followed with 16 points.

Amarillo High survives upset bid from Lubbock Monterey 

It was a much closer contest than many expected, however, Amarillo High was able to force overtime against upset-minded Lubbock Monterey and come away with a hard fought 57-51 victory at the Plainsman Gym on Friday night.

This was a close contest throughout with the Sandies finding themselves down 46-44 late in the fourth. With the closing seconds ticking down, Joaquin Ortega missed a game-winning 3-point attempt, but teammate Zach Brown was able to secure the rebound and score the put back to tie the game 46-46 as time expired forcing overtime.

AHS then carried that momentum into OT outscoring the Plainsman 11-5.

Brown had a great night scoring a team-high 19 points with none bigger than his put back shot to send the game to overtime. Ortega chipped in 11 and Jax Richards added 10.

AHS heads into the Christmas break 16-3 overall and unbeaten in District 3-5A at 5-0. Monterey (6-12) drops to 2-2 in the league.

Friday’s top performers 

• Gruver’s Mason Lankford is off to a tremendous start through the Greyhounds first two games coming right off the football field eight days ago. The phenomenal freshman poured in a team-high 16 points highlighted by two dunks that helped Gruver knock off Hansford County rival Spearman 51-32.
• Jeff Rollerson helped Shamrock by rolling up 36 points during an 81-50 win over Hedley.
• Jacorey Fields and Hawk Ferris combined for 38 points during Tascosa’s key District 3-5A home victory 78-75 against Lubbock-Cooper. Fields led the way with 23 points followed by Farris with 18.
• Palo Duro’s prolific shooter Victor Juarez posted a game-high 24 points including 12 in the opening quarter as the Dons took down Lubbock High 61-20.
• West Plains cruised past Perryton 66-42 with big thanks to Ayden Larra’s 18 points and Reid Macon’s 16. Macon was playing quarterback during the Wolves historic run to the state semifinals just one week ago.
• Julian Alonzo played a big role in Pampa’s 58-40 district win against Hereford dropping in a team-high 16 points.
• Panhandle’s Caden Armes lit it up from the field scoring a game-high 26 points to get the Panthers a 69-37 win against Wheeler in a District 2-2A opener.
• Groom held off Claude 43-40 for a key district win Friday. Bryson Shuck was a clutch reason for the Tigers victory registering a team-best 17 points.
• Happy’s Miguel Bressler poured in 19 points to lift the Cowboys past Hart 69-26.
