District 3-5A boys 

Dick Bivins Stadium played host to a crosstown rivalry between two of the top teams in District 3-5A this past Monday.

In the end, it was the Caprock Longhorns getting the best of Palo Duro with a 5-2 victory.

Caprock wasted no time taking an early 1-0 lead on a thrilling goal by Aldo Carrasco, assisted by Luis Castellon. The score remained 1-0 until late in the first half, when a foul resulted in a Palo Duro penalty kick. Butoyi Tharcisse had no trouble putting the PK in the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.

Caprock responded with two more goals of its own from Salvador Flores, assisted Diego Pacheco, Pacheco also added a goal to finish out the first half and take a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

Fernando Lira assisted by Alfredo Haro, added a fourth goal for the Longhorns, putting the Longhorns up 4-1 early in the second half. Palo Duro cut the lead in half 4-2 with 11:45, however Caprock sealed the win on a goal from Andrew Venzor off an assist from Flores.

Caprock then traveled to Lubbock Coronado on Friday night and came away with a lopsided 6-0 victory.

Fernando Lira had a goal with two assists. Carrasco netted two goals. The Longhorns (9-2 overall) continue to stay strong in District 3-5A moving to 5-1.

Palo Duro was able to bounce back Friday getting a 3-0 shutout of Lubbock High.

The Dons saw goals from Jose Garcia, Ever Gutierrez and Tharcisse Butoyi in the victory. Palo Duro moves to 6-4 overall on the year and 4-2 in league play.

Boys district quick hits

  • Tascosa got the week off started on the right foot taking down arch-rival Amarillo High 1-0 but on Friday couldn’t hold an early three-goal lead which resulted in a 3-3 tie on the road at Lubbock-Cooper. The Rebels are 7-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in District 3-5A.
  • Following the loss to Tascosa, AHS dropped another match this time at the hands of Lubbock Monterey 5-0. The Sandies (4-5-1 overall) fall to 4-5-1 in district.
  • The Dumas Demons have come out strong to open District 3-4A racking up wins against Randall 4-0 and then beating Borger 5-1. The Demons were led by Saul Calderon who scored three goals in those two matchups. Dumas improves to 7-1 overall and remain perfect in district at 4-0.
  • Borger did get a win earlier in the week against rival Pampa 3-2 on Tuesday. victory against rival Pampa. In an exciting back-and-forth clash, Luis Chavez provided a pair of assists. Borger (5-7) is now 2-2 in District 3-4.
  • Pampa also went 1-1 for the week taking down Hereford 4-1 on Friday. Against the Whitefaces, Ismael Perez scored two goals and dished out two assists. The Harvesters are 1-1-2 in district and 5-4-3 overall.
  • Perryton had a superb week beating Canyon 9-1 followed by a hard fought 2-1 victory against West Plains. The Rangers (5-6) are in the hunt atop the district race at 3-1.
  • Despite the loss to Perryton, the Wolves hustled past Hereford 5-0. Christopher Navarrete was the spark for West Plains with an unassisted goal and tacked on three assists in that win. The Wolves push their overall mark to 7-3-1 and are now 2-1-1 in the league.
  • Randall fell to Dumas 5-0 but were able to claim a victory against CISD rival Canyon 5-3 on Friday. Randall is now 4-4-1 overall and 1-3 in District 3-4A. The Eagles move to 3-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in district.

District 3-4A Girls 

West Plains and Randall continue be the powerful teams to watch for in District 3-4A through the early portion of the schedule.

Randall downed Dumas 9-1 early in the week and then grounded the Canyon Lady Eagles with an 8-0 shutout on Friday at Happy State Bank Stadium. The Lady Raiders are 4-0 so far in District 3-4A and 8-5 overall.

In those victories, Randall’s Kyndal McClain totaled five goals in the pair of wins including a hattrick against Dumas.

West Plains kept pace with the Lady Raiders pummeling Hereford 10-0 then blanking Perryton 3-0.

The Lady Wolves have jumped out to a 4-0 start to district and are now 7-2-2 overall.

Mya Bartlett led the way for West Plains scoring five goals over the two wins including four goals against Hereford.

West Plains and Randall meet up with first place on the line at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Happy State Bank Stadium.

Girls district quick hits 

  • Despite dropping the match to Randall, Canyon did get a win besting Perryton 3-2 earlier in the week. The Lady Eagles (3-7-1) push their district mark to 3-1. Aspen Esch was clutch in the win against Perryton with two goals and an assist.
  • The Borger Lady Bulldogs pulled off a pair of shutouts beating Pampa 7-0 and Dumas 9-0. The Lady Bulldogs were able to get back into contention in the district race at 2-2 while improving to 6-3 overall.
  • Pampa did bounce back thanks to a 5-2 win against Hereford on Friday night. Aliyah Acosta had a huge effort with four goals. Mya Ramos and Perla Hernandez added two assists each. Pampa (1-8) is 1-3 in district action.
  • In District 3-5A, Amarillo High earned a hard fought 1-0 shutout of rival Tascosa then played to a 1-1 draw against Lubbock Monterey. The Lady Sandies (9-1-1 overall) still lead the district at 6-0-1. Sophia Hernandez scored both goals for AHS over the week.
  • The Tascosa Lady Rebels had two tough losses over the week. The Lady Rebels fell to Amarillo High 1-0 and then to Lubbock-Cooper by that same score. Tascosa falls to 3-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the league.
  • Palo Duro and Caprock played to a scoreless tie Monday night during a District 3-5A clash. Both teams created scoring opportunities, but neither could produce a goal. Anaiyah Maldonado had three saves in net for the Lady Dons. Palo Duro then traveled to Lubbock and beat the Lady Westerners 3-0 on Friday. Brenda Zepeda highlighted the win with two goals. Palo Duro now sits at 5-4-3 overall and 2-2-2 in District 3-5A.
  • Caprock finished out its week getting a 1-1 tie with Lubbock Coronado. Christian Meza and Nereida Porras connected for the Lady Longhorns lone goal. Caprock is at 1-5-5 overall and 0-3-4 in the league.
