Briley Barnes, Amarillo High, basketball, Sr.
On the court: Barnes showed her senior leadership and then some to help guide her team back to the UIL Class 5A state tournament with wins over Mansfield Timberview and Lake Dallas at last weekend’s Region I-5A Tournament. In a 73-50 semifinal win over Timberview, Barnes garnered a double-double scoring 10 points to go with 18 rebounds. Once again, Barnes matched that effort during a 63-42 blowout of Lake Dallas pouring in 10 points, and pulling down 11 boards. On the season, the University of Tulsa signee is averaging over 12 points a game, and over seven rebounds per contest. Barnes is also the only Lady Sandie remaining that was a part of the 2019 state championship team.
Coach Jeff Williams: “Briley had such a big weekend for us. She dominated the boards which was so important. I think she nabbed every defensive rebound. She shot the ball well and didn’t try to force the issue. She just shined and I was so proud of her. One thing about Briley, she isn’t the vocal leader on our team, but she’ll lead by example by hard she goes in practice and during games. She is type of player that brings her best every single day. She’s been such a steady person on and off the court and an elite athlete for sure.”
Barnes: “It’s amazing being a senior and getting this opportunity to go back to state. I was a freshman on the last state team, so to be a leader now is a tremendous feeling. Looking back at the beginning of the season to now we’ve grown so much and just gotten better each week. We always push each other to get better and I think that’s what makes this team so special. Now the hard work is paying off and it’s time to go down to state and finish the goal we’ve been striving for.”
