On the course: Wellington’s Kyla Kane is simply incredible when it comes to running at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Kane left the field behind down the stretch clocking a 12:17.7 to win by more than 30 seconds.

For a fourth straight year Kane ran an amazing race to take gold as the Region I-2A individual champion last Monday. That means in all four years of high school Kane never lost at the prestigious regional meet.

Kane is not only a four-time winner at regionals, but the decorated senior is a two-time individual Class 2A state champion. The West Texas A&M basketball commit won it as a freshman in 2018, and then again as a junior last year, as she will look for her third individual state championship Saturday in Round Rock.

Coach Chris Sumrall: “I think what Kyla has done is more than impressive. For her to win four district champions, and regional champions is rare, and amazing. She’s battled injuries this year and only ran in three meets. She has a great work ethic, and I think that’s what separates her from everyone else. Kyla comes to practice and works hard, and the other kids see it. She never takes a day off.”

Kane: “Winning at regional all four years was a goal of mine since I was a freshman. It’s been important to always work harder to always be on top and not fall off. It’s been a slow start being hurt, but I’m thankful to be back running. My goal now is to go win back-to-back state championships. I won as a freshman, and a junior, but I’ve never won state consecutively. I’m I want to go out with a bang.”
