The Wellington Skyrockets got a heavy dose of physical fronts from Abernathy as well as heavy dose of quarterback Bryson Daily in a 51-6 loss on Friday night at Antelope Stadium.

The loss drops No. 4-ranked Wellington from Class 2A Division II to 2-1 overall and snaps its 19-game regular season win streak dating back to 2017.

The Skyrockets last loss came in the season opener, Sept. 1, 2017, in a 9-8 defeat to Childress.

Abernathy, the No. 4-ranked team from Class 3A DII, improves to 3-0 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Antelopes were able to dominate up front on both sides of the ball. Abernathy smashed the Wellington defensive line, piling up 462 yards of offense with 369 of those yards coming on the ground. Defensively, Abernathy allowed Wellington to run only 16 first half plays, giving up one touchdown before the half on a 65-yard touchdown toss from Creighton Killian to John Michael Holcomb.

The Abernathy defense was stellar otherwise holding Wellington to six total first downs and 128 yards of offense.

MISCUES

Even when the Skyrockets saw a positive first half play, things still went wrong. Wellington fumble the ball five times and threw an interception for a total of six turnovers in the contest. The Antelopes made Wellington pay, scoring 21 points off those mistakes.

Antelopes quarterback Bryson Daily gains big yards through the Wellington defense.

STARS OF THE GAME

Daily is as good as advertised. Taking advantage of big running lanes, the senior leader rushed for 163 yards on 17 carries with three rushing touchdowns. His first score near the end of the first quarter of 34 yards help set the tone for the rest of the game. Daily also passed for 93 yards. Teammate Anthony Clarkson was equally effective running for 134 yards on 13 carries with a pair of TDs.
