Amarillo-area boys bi-district scores for February 19-20

Canadian rolls over Slaton

Canadian was jumping on fans radars after a perfect district season and that momentum carried as the Wildcats thumped Slaton 72-46 during a Class 3A bi-district game on Tuesday night at the Tascosa Activity Center.

Canadian (16-3) opened the game going on a 17-5 run in the first quarter. By the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats were in total control leading 59-38.

Connor Miller and Riggs Pennington were a mismatch for the Tigers as the duo combined for 43 points. Miller led the team with 22 followed by Pennington’s 21. Camren Cavalier also finished in double-digits thanks to 13 points.

The Wildcats (16-3) advance to the area around to square off with Alpine at a time and place to be determined.

Stratford stuns Wellington 

In one of the biggest surprises of the opening round, the Stratford Elks were able to hold off District 2-2A co-champion Wellington by a thrilling 54-50 score in a Class 2A bi-district matchup at the Caprock Activity Center on Tuesday night.

The Elks and Skyrockets battled throughout the contest. Stratford led 26-25 at half, and 40-33 after three and were able to hold off Wellington in the final minutes.

Stratford (10-10) advances to play Farwell (24-9) in the area round at a time and place to be determined. Wellington ends its season at 21-8.

Bryce Braden, Stratford’s All-State quarterback-linebacker on the gridiron, got it done on the hardwood against the Skyrockets scoring a game-high 21 points. Teammate Chase Lantelme chipped in with 14.

District 4-4A makes it a clean sweep

District 4-4A flexed its muscle over the first two nights of the playoffs by completely eliminating District 3-4A.

Randall, Canyon, West Plains, and Hereford all earned victories on Monday and Tuesday to advance into the area round.

Hereford, a No. 4-seed, got the biggest victory of the first round knocking off district champion, Seminole, 53-41 on Tuesday night. The Whitefaces were led by Tyi Duque’s 16 points with teammate Juan Bermudez following posting 12.

Randall had a special guest in the house at Frenship High School during a 103-34 win over Andrews in their bi-district clash. Head basketball coach Leslie Broadhurst was in attendance to watch his Raiders not even two weeks removed from having brain surgery.

Canyon crushed Monahans 53-32 in its bi-district clash on Monday, and West Plains downed Midland Greenwood 68-56 to complete the district sweep on Tuesday.

Bi-district top performers

Amarillo High’s Braden Hausen posted a game-high 26 points behind nine 3-pointers in the Sandies 76-31 blowout over Abilene Wylie.

JaCorey Fields led the Tascosa Rebels to the area round with 26 points in a 67-60 victory against Lubbock Monterey.

Ascension Academy opened the TAPPS Class 2A playoffs in style beating up Ovilla Christian 62-45 at home in an area round contest. Freshman Jaxon Richards was flat out stellar pouring in a game-high 32 points including 10 3-pointers. The Cardinals are now a perfect 22-0.

Canyon’s Kelson Jones scored 24 points as the Eagles soared past Monahans 53-32.

Levi Ashurst of Wheeler came in clutch with 20 points that helped the Mustangs hold off West Texas High 47-45.

Valley’s Kanyon Taylor went for a game-high 28 points during a 74-42 rout of Fort Elliott.

Creed Hochstein helped Nazareth cruise to an 86-24 victory over Adrian putting up 17 points.

Clarendon’s Lyric Smith posted 24 points to lift the Broncos past Sanford-Fritch 75-61.

Haiden Thompson of Miami went for 20 points in a 56-17 victory over White Deer.
