Bushland stuns Brownfield
In one of the bigger surprises of the second round of the UIL playoffs, Bushland wasn’t ready to go home quite yet and it showed taking command of the game down the stretch and never looking back to stun No. 5-ranked Brownfield 59-51 during a Class 3A Division I regional quarterfinal matchup at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University on Friday night.
With the victory, Bushland was able to avenge and early season loss to the Cubs over the Christmas break.
The Falcons, the District 1-3A champions, improve to 17-11 overall on the year and are now set to meet up with Iowa Park (25-8) in the regional semifinals at a time and place to be determined. The Cubs season comes to a shocking end at 25-9.
Brownfield jumped out to a 10-6 first quarter lead but that’s as much momentum as the Cubs would sustain. The Falcons caught fire in the second quarter outscoring the Cubs 16-9 to go up 22-19 at the break. In the second half, Bushland’s defense started frustrating Brownfield as the offense made big shots to pull away.
Jenner King paced the Falcons with 16 points while teammate Jordan Mariscal – who hit a game-winning buzzer beater Tuesday to defeat Littlefield – capped of a tremendous week with 15 points.

Childress claws past Coahoma
Like district rival Bushland, Childress was able to survive and advanced holding off Coahoma 53-45 during a Class 3A Division II clash in Haskell on Friday night.
It was a tight contest throughout with the Bobcats leading 14-11 at the end of the first, 30-25 at the break and 37-33 after three. Down the stretch Childress was able to fend off the Bulldogs and seal the second-round win.
Raine Walsh provided the spark offensively with a team-best 19 points for Childress. Teammate Caleb Moore added 14.
The Bobcats (19-14) now move on to the regional semifinals for a date with Wichita Falls City View (15-11) at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Vernon.

Gruver handles Floydada
Through the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Gruver Greyhounds are proving why they were a Class 2A Division II favorite after looking very impressive during a 62-41 thumping of Floydada in a regional quarterfinal game Friday night in Bushland.
The Greyhounds (18-1) head on to the regional semifinals where they will battle Miles (19-7) at a time and place to be determined.
Gruver flexed its muscle against a very good Whirlwind team in the first half. The Greyhounds had hot shooting to start taking a 25-16 lead after one. After a slower second quarter where Gruver led 33-22 at the break, the pace picked back up as the Greyhounds pulled away in the third putting the game away up 50-33 after three quarters.
Briggs Satterfield led a balanced scoring attack with a team-high 14 points. Freshman Mason Lankford followed with 13 while Stephen Cowan added 12 and Brock Butler chipped in 11.
