Wellington outlasts Stratford in overtime

In one of the better matchups to open the UIL playoffs Monday night, Wellington was able to hold off District 1-2A champion Stratford getting a hard fought 69-66 overtime win in a Class 2A Division I bi-district matchup at the McNeely Fieldhouse in Pampa.

The Lady Skyrockets move to 23-9 overall on the year and will now face New Deal (22-13) in the regional quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined. Stratford ends a great season at 27-5 overall.

Wellington and the Lady Elks battled back-and-forth throughout with the game heading to overtime tied 58-58. In overtime, the Lady Skyrockets were able to pull away outscoring Stratford 11-7.

Slaton stuns Canadian in OT thriller

In a game that saw major momentum swings in the second half, the Slaton Tigerettes left the Canadian Lady Cats stunned thanks to a buzzer beating 3-pointer to pull off the upset 41-38 during a UIL Class 3A Division II bi-district clash at the Leslie Broadhurst Gym on the campus of Randall High School on Monday night.

Slaton took a slight 16-15 advantage into halftime and then seized momentum with a 12-4 run in the third quarter to go up 30-22 entering the fourth quarter. The Lady Cats didn’t back down going on an 11-0 run to go up 33-30 with 30 seconds to play. However, Slaton’s Adrianna Gonzales started her heroics hitting a game-tying 3-pointer just inside 20 seconds sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Gonzales pulled off a thrilling 3-point shot at the buzzer to give the Tigerettes a remarkable 41-38 victory.

Slaton is now 17-10 overall while Canadian, which was once 30-0, lost three out of its last four down the stretch ending the year at 31-3.

Gonzales led Slaton with 10 points while Canadian’s Elyse Beck scored a game-high 16.
