3 things that happened in Monday’s bi-district round
Tascosa-Amarillo High advance
It was a big night for Amarillo ISD schools in the opening round of the UIL girls’ basketball playoffs on Monday. Both the Amarillo High Lady Sandies and Tascosa Lady Rebels won by double digits to advance into the area round.
The No. 8-ranked Lady Sandies had no problem rolling over Lubbock High 86-35 in a Class 5A bi-district game in Plainview. McKenzie Smith led all scorers with 27 points, as Taytum Bell added 14.
Tascosa used a late second half push to take down Lubbock Coronado in a Class 5A bi-district clash at Dimmitt. Leading 35-32 after the third quarter, the Lady Rebels secured the victory with a 10-0 run to open the fourth. Daizjia Oages had a team-high 13, followed by Avery Carter’s 12.
Usual suspects advance
As expected, Class 2A is stacked at the top and it showed with Gruver, Panhandle and Wellington all cruising to wins to open the bi-district round. The three district champions had no issues in their opening round wins as the Lady Hounds downed Wheeler 77-22, Panhandle stomped Olton 79-37, and Wellington blasted Sanford-Fritch 67-29. The second round will be a little more interesting with Gruver taking on Tuesday’s Vega-Floydada winner, the Lady Skyrockets will battle Farwell and Panhandle will take on Clarendon.
