Tascosa holds off Lubbock-Cooper in 5A regional quarterfinalsÂ
The Tascosa Lady Rebels put themselves on the radar knocking out the state runner-up from a year ago in Lubbock-Cooper while gaining a measure of revenge in the process during a 64-54 victory in a wild Class 5A regional quarterfinal at the Joe Lombard Gymnasium in Canyon on Tuesday night.
The Lady Rebels avenge a loss to the Lady Pirates (25-10) after falling in this same round a year ago. Tascosa (26-6), under second-year head coach Chris Sumrall, is now headed to the Region I-5A Tournament for the first time since 2019.
“We started thinking last year we could be in this conversation after last year,” Sumrall said. “Lubbock-Cooper is really good. It was just a big win for us and I’m just excited for the program.”
Tascosa will take on Argyle (33-5) in a Region I-5A Tournament semifinal at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Kae Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls.
The Lady Rebels and Lubbock-Cooper both started hot in the opening quarter entering the second stanza tied, 17-17. That’s when Tascosa started taking over the momentum. In the final three minutes before halftime, the Lady Rebels went on a 13-0 run to take a 32-19 lead into the break.
The third quarter was more of the same. Thanks to the outside shooting of Devaeh Johnson, easy transition points from Nic’Kiyah Fisher and Aniyah Brackens along with the stellar post play of Avery Carter, Tascosa built a 24-point third quarter advantage and led 49-28 heading into the final frame.
“Those two stretches were really big for us,” Sumrall said. “Devaeh hit a couple of 3-pointers. We got the ball inside, and we got transition points during that time. That really helped us when it counted.”
However, Lubbock-Cooper didn’t go away. Rallying back the entire fourth quarter behind the hot-hand of Majik Esquivez, who scored 12 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth, the Lady Pirtes cut the lead to 58-53 with a minute to play.
Fortunately for Tascosa, the Lady Rebels were able to stifle that momentum when Carter dribbled her way out of a Lady Pirate press and found Fisher all alone for an easy layup giving Tascosa a 60-53 advantage with 43 seconds left as they never looked back.
Carter was strong inside giving Lubbock-Cooper problems finishing with a team-high 19 points. Johnson and Brackens each tallied 13 and Fisher poured in 11.
