Elyes Torres, Highland Park football, Jr.
On the field: Torres did it all helping the Highland Park Hornets win their first season opener since 2019 by beating Tulia at home, 33-21, last Friday night. The versatile Torres made a huge impact on the offensive side of the ball rushing for 97 yards on only four carries, averaging 24.5 yards a carry, snagged four catches for 81 yards totaling four touchdowns. Defensively, the junior did just as good a job making plays all over the field with 11 tackles, an interception and a pass breakup.
Coach Ty Stout: Elyes is a player we’re really using as a utility guy. He can play any position on the field and he’s very smart. He understands the offense and he makes adjustments very well. On defense, he plays linebacker but he can easily move to the corner or safety position. His versatility is unreal. Just from last year he’s probably put on 15-pounds from last year and his speed is much better. His IQ for football has improved and he’s really showing leadership. He pushes guys to be their best. Off the field, he’s very chill. He flips a switch on the field but he’s the kind of young man that spends a lot of time in the coach’s office. He just grows on you the more you get to know him.”
Torres: “It was really important to open the year with a win. We wanted to show people what we’re doing out here, and we could compete with a Class 3A team. The coaches are doing a great job of changing the culture and they use the players to the best of their abilities. I’ve worked hard to get bigger and faster and try to do anything I can to get better. I feel like I played pretty well to open the year, but I know there are things I can work on. I need to get better with my blocking and working on my routes and reading my blocks.”
