Slade Russell, West Plains football, Soph.
On the field: Russell put together one of his best efforts of the season during a 45-14 lopsided win over Hereford that helped West Plains secure the outright District 2-4A Division I championship last week.
Behind stellar play from his offensive line, the speedy sophomore, diced up the Whiteface defense, toting the rock 20 times for 228 yards with a touchdown.
On the season, Russell is having a tremendous year chewing up 982 yards on 163 carries with 11 touchdowns. He’s also snagged 21 catches for 238 yards with four more scores.
Coach Adam Cummings: “We’re clicking at the right time after how we played in district. We started rough, but nobody jumped ship and things fell into place. Slade is one of the reasons why. He brings a lot of juice and energy to practice every day. He always makes things fun, but he is always locked in as well. He does a great job and has come on this season and is very mature for a sophomore.”
Russell: “I think we’re playing great and clicking at the right time going. After the schedule we had, we’re ready for the playoffs. What’s great about this team, is we all play for each other and have a lot of trust. I have great trust in my offensive line and I know I can’t be successful without them. They get me the holes I need, and I think my vision is better and I’m being more patient to find the lanes.”
