Stephen Cowan, Gruver football, Sr.
On the field: The Gruver Greyhounds are back in the UIL Class 2A Division II state quarterfinals for the first time since 2018 after thumping Tahoka 49-7 last week. On top of a complete team effort, Cowan put together a complete effort of his own as the wide receiver and defensive back did damage on both sides of the ball.
On the offensive side, Cowan had two catches for 101 yards. Defensively, Cowan flew all over the field racking up 15 tackles while snagging two interceptions.
On the season, Cowan has been a leader for the unbeaten Greyhounds especially on defense totaling 120 tackles with five picks.
Coach Kurt Haberthur: ““Stephen is a phenomenal person not just a great football player. He’s been raised the right way and has great character and will do anything to make his family proud. It doesn’t matter which sport he plays, he is a vocal leader and someone that is easy to root for. He plays both sides of the ball, but I love what he does for us defensively. He’s strong, quick, and always gets us lined up correctly. It’s like having another coach on the field.”
Cowan: “Right now we’re just all coming together and playing amazing. There isn’t any individuals on this team and no one cares what the stats are as long as we win at the end of the day. We are all brothers and all play for one another. I just want to keep getting better and help this team anyway that I can.”
