Panhandle dominates Wellington to stay unbeaten 

The Panhandle Panthers are playing like a team on a mission and that didn’t slow down during a 41-21 dismantling of a very talented Wellington squad at Panthers Stadium on Friday night.

The Panthers complete the non-district schedule an impressive 5-0 and are one of only six undefeated Texas Panhandle teams. Wellington suffered its second straight loss dropping to 3-2.

The Panthers took control in the first half going up 27-7 and ran away from that point forward.

Broxton Robinson did his job on both sides of the ball. On the offensive side, the speedy Robinson ran it 16 times for 167 yards with two touchdowns. Robinson also threw for 114 yards with a 58-yard connection to Landon Andrews for a score.

Teammate Rush Waltersheid led the Panthers in rushing with 136 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. On Defense, Robinson made eight tackles, Brayson Choate had 10 tackles and Caiden Crooks tallied seven tackles with an interception.

Stratford snaps two-game skid with win over Trinity 

Fresh off a bye week, the Stratford Elks were able to regroup after dropping two straight games and get a lopsided 30-12 win over Lubbock Trinity Christian on Eddie Metcalf Field at E.L. Sam Bass Stadium on Friday night.

The Elks (2-2 overall) put this game away going up 20-6 at the half behind a Tripp Hudson touchdown snag from Chase Lantelme and a Bryce Braden five-yard touchdown run.

Braden finished the game with 51 yards rushing on 15 carries with two trips to the endzone. The Air Force commit also threw for 65 yards. The Stratford defense limited the Lions to 188 total yards.

Gruver keeps on rolling 

Through the first five weeks of the season, it’s hard to find a team playing any better football than the Gruver Greyhounds.

On Thursday night, the Greyhounds kept that momentum rolling by going over the state line and pummeling Guymon, Okla., 62-20.

The Greyhounds are one of only six unbeaten teams in the Texas Panhandle at 5-0.

The Gruver offense was absolutely explosive on the night totaling 735 yards with 482 of those coming on the ground.

Running back Walker Maupin couldn’t be stopped torching right by the Tiger defense the entire game piling up an eye-opening 304 yards on only eight carries, popping off 38 yards per carry with four touchdowns. Quarterback Briggs Satterfield did his job going 11-of-17 threw the air for 228 yards and two scores.

Defensively, Victor Flores made five tackles with two forced fumbles and Stephen Cowan added six tackles with a pick.

Spearman shuts down Shamrock 

Coming off a tough loss last week at home, the Spearman Lynx pulled it together on the road for a much-needed 56-0 shutout against Shamrock on Friday night at El Paso Field.

The Lynx push their record to 2-3 on the year while the Irish drop to 3-2.

Spearman ate up Shamrock in the run game finishing with 512 yards.

Jailen Vasquez ran for a team-high 110 yards on five carries with a touchdown. Quarterback Cy Davis did his damage more with his feet chewing up 107 yards on eight carries with two trips to paydirt and fullback JP Carbajal touched it six times for 99 yards with two scores.

The Lynx defense limited Shamrock, which were playing without quarterback Philip Cook, to 107 total yards.

Week 5 non-district quick hits 

• Wheeler jumped all over Sanford-Fritch and never looked back for a 56-0 shutout home victory. Mustang running back Julius Atherton led the offense with 154 yards on 14 carries with three scores. Defensively, Jackson Graves was a menace getting 19 total tackles, nine for a loss, with seven sacks. Wheeler is now 4-1 overall. Fritch falls to 1-4.
• Bovina gets back in the win column taking down Smyer 28-12 on the road Friday. The Mustangs (2-3) broke open a tie game with a 16-point fourth quarter. Angel Lara toted the rock 27 times for 219 yards with three touchdowns to lead Bovina.
• Olton held off a valiant effort from Vega 28-21 at Longhorns Stadium on Friday. Despite the defeat, Vega’s Omar Segovia carried the ball 25 times for 216 yards with three touchdowns. Teammate Walker te Velde made 18 tackles. Vega falls to 1-4 while the Mustangs are now 3-2.
• Post knocked off Farwell 59-6 on Friday night. The Antelopes stay undefeated at 5-0. The Steers drop to 1-4.
• Clarendon is still seeking its first win on the year after falling to Lockney 29-20 on Friday. The Broncos are now 0-5.
