Randall holds on to edge Dumas
In terms of quality, Friday night’s district opener between Randall and Dumas turned out to be more tense than entertaining, but in the end, it was rewarding.
After scoring two first quarter touchdowns, Randall had to hold in with defense on the road. Dumas scored a touchdown in the first quarter but nobody found the end zone after that, as Randall came away with a 14-13 victory to give coach Dan Sherwood his first district win with the Raiders.
Randall (4-3, 1-0) had been scoring points through the first six games of the season, but found offense far tougher to come by against Dumas (2-5, 0-1). The Raiders won despite the fact the Demons outgained them by a 361-233 yardage count.
R.J. Matthews caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Tryston Sanchez to open the scoring for Randall before Dumas tied it on a 2-yard run by Johnny Marquez. Sanchez then scored on a 5-yard run to give the Raiders a 14-7 lead, and those turned out to be the winning points.
Joshua Samarripa kicked a pair of 23-yard field goals in the second and third quarter for the Demons to cut it to 14-13, but that was the scoring for the game.
In addition to his touchdown catch, Matthews had two interceptions for the Raiders. Luis Escarcega had a game-high 153 yards on 25 carries for Dumas.
Hereford crushes Pampa
