Class 5A-4A roundup- Canyon outguns Perryton, Dumas thrashes Estacado, Randall rolls past Clovis

Canyon soars past Perryton 

Canyon’s Derrek Clements continued to assert himself as one of the best returning quarterbacks in the area, as he threw six touchdown passes to lead the Eagles to a 49-27 win on the road Friday night which lifted them to 2-0 on the season.

Clements, a senior, completed 24-of-37 passes for 335 yards and threw scoring passes to six different receivers. Hunter Wilson had the biggest night in Canyon’s receiving corps, with five catches for 140 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles were hardly one-dimensional offensively though, as they ran for 258 yards. Sam Johnson led the ground attack with 19 carries for 171 yards and a touchdown.

Perryton fell to 1-1 on the season.

Randall rolls past Clovis

Six days after Canyon routed Clovis, N.M. to open the season, the Canyon ISD schools made it a clean sweep to open the season, as Randall picked up its first win of the season by routing the Wildcats 35-10 at Happy State Bank Stadium on Thursday night.

The Raiders (1-1) took control early and held a 28-3 halftime lead with 21 points in the second quarter and cruised the rest of the way. Nathan Baker was an all-purpose standout for Randall, catching seven passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns and also returned a punt 74 yards for a score.

Randall also got a big game at quarterback from Nathan White, who completed 11-of-15 passes for 207 yards and four touchdowns.

Dumas picks up first win at Estacado

Following a season opening loss at home to powerful Lubbock-Cooper, Dumas had more success on the road against another Lubbock school, scoring 34 unanswered points to open the game at Lubbock Estacado and cruise to a 34-7 victory.

Quarterback Emmanuel Ibanez was a dual threat for the Demons (1-1) as he threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns and led Dumas with 103 yards rushing on 14 carries. Dumas outgained Estacado (1-1) by a 353-184 margin and didn’t allow the Matadors to score until the final minute of the game.

Pampa rallies past Plainview

Pampa again fell behind early, but the Harvesters again bounced back behind freshman running back Max Neff as they beat Plainview 25-21 in their home opener.

The Harvesters (2-0) trailed 21-9 at the end of the first quarter but came back in the second quarter to take the lead. Neff gave Pampa a 25-21 lead with a 38-yard scoring catch from Michael Campos in a game which was scoreless in the second half.

In only his second game on the varsity, Neff ran for 297 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.

Borger gets first win over River Road

River Road began and ended the scoring at Borger, but in between it was all Borger, as the Bulldogs scored 26 unanswered points to get in the win column with a 26-14 win.

Lico Delgado opened the scoring for River Road with a 2-yard run in the first quarter, but the Wildcats managed nothing else until the fourth quarter. Borger (1-1) had three runners go over 60 yards, as Avery Adame led the way with 86 yards and Tray Toliver ran for 77 yards and threw a touchdown.

River Road fell to 1-1.

West Plains falls to Midland Greenwood

The West Plains Wolves put up a tough fight in their second game as a varsity program but fell just short in losing to Midland Greenwood 25-20 at Happy State Bank Stadium.

West Plains (0-2) led 6-3 in the first quarter, but Greenwood (1-1) scored 22 unanswered points to take the lead for good.

The Wolves actually outgained Greenwood by a 327-290 margin. Freshman quarterback 29-of-47 for 224 yards with a touchdown pass to Jedd Phillips. Macon also ran for a score.

Hereford overpowered by Wichita Falls High

Hereford couldn’t contain the Wichita Falls offense, as the Whitefaces gave up 42 points in the first half and lost their second straight game with a 52-28 defeat.

Carlos Duran threw a pair of touchdown passes to Eric Alvarez in the first half for Hereford (0-2), but Wichita Falls (1-1) led 42-14 at halftime. Hereford gave up almost 60 yards of total offense, the second straight week they’ve surrendered yardage in that neighborhood.

Duran threw for 266 yards and four scores, three of them to Alvarez, who had six catches for 159 yards.

Amarillo High loses home opener to fall to 0-2

Amarillo High had a big offensive night in its home opener, but the Sandies again had breakdowns defensively, as they gave up 47 points for the second straight week in falling to Cleveland, N.M. 47-30 at Dick Bivins Stadium to fall to 0-2.

The Sandies took a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Mason Graham to Jameson Garcia, but that was the last time they led. Cleveland (2-1) piled up 566 yards on AHS.

Amarillo High had a solid offensive night with 453 total yards. Graham threw three long scoring passes, two to Garcia and one to Pius Vokes.
