Costly turnovers dooms Caprock in loss to Cooper
Abilene Cooper’s Dylon Davis returns an interception for a touchdown against Caprock on Friday night at Dick Bivins Stadium. [John Moore/ Press Pass Sports]
Caprock committed untimely turnovers and gave up the big play.
Those miscues helped Abilene Cooper remain undefeated as the Cougars went on for a 51-24 win on Friday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.
Caprock (2-5 overall) suffers its first loss in Disrict 2-5A Division I, dropping to 1-2. The No. 9-ranked Cougars stay perfect on the season at 8-0 and move to 4-0 in 2-5A Division I.
With both offenses off to sluggish starts, and the defenses playing solid, Cooper was able to take advantage converting Caprock interceptions into a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. The Longhorns were never able to get within double digits after that.
Cooper defensive back Dylon Davis made two first half interceptions. His first pick, set up the Cougars first score on a 15-yard run by Noah Garcia, giving Cooper a 7-0 first quarter lead.
Davis’ second interception was even more beneficial, taking a Tarik Williams pass 71 yards the other way for a touchdown.
Davis tallied three interceptions during the contest setting Cooper’s new school-record for interceptions in a season with 10.
Trailing 21-3, the Longhorns got the ball to start the second half and went 80 yards on seven plays, aided by a face mask penalty, as Corbin Putman finished the drive with a 1-yard run to cut it to 21-10.
But three plays after the ensuing kickoff, Cooper quarterback Aidan Thompson hit Daelin Campos on a wheel route and Campos did the rest himself, taking it 61 yards for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 27-10.
It was all Cooper from that point forward.
Running back Noah Garcia ran for 177 yards including a school-record 96-yard TD run to open the fourth quarter.
