A Legacy of Leadership
When Randall High School opened its doors in 1988, Rebekah James wasn’t just starting a new chapter – she was beginning a dynasty. Her 43-year coaching journey, all within Canyon ISD, began at Canyon Junior High before helping establish what would become one of the most respected cross country programs in the Texas Panhandle.
That first state championship in cross country stands as a testament to her dedication, but it was just the beginning of a legacy that continues to grow. In a region known for producing exceptional athletes and coaches, James has consistently kept Randall at the forefront of distance running excellence.

Beyond the Running Trail
While her athletes know her as stubborn and relentless in pursuit of excellence, there’s another side to Coach James that showcases her caring nature. When she’s not coaching champions or listening to The Eagle radio station in her office, she’s transforming lives through SCAR (Second Chance Animal Rescue) in Amarillo.Having fostered nearly 200 puppies in the last year alone, James brings the same dedication to animal rescue that she brings to coaching.
“I foster puppies and help them get adopted.”
Using Facebook to connect these animals with forever homes, this balance of competitive drive and compassionate care defines her approach to both coaching and life.

The Hunter’s Philosophy
“In Cross Country, you always want to be the hunter and not the prey,” James explains, a philosophy that has guided countless runners to success. Her favorite training ground, the challenging Palisades, epitomizes her “practice, practice, practice” mentality. Her straightforward coaching motto:
“Hard work pays off.”
This isn’t just a saying – it’s a proven formula that has produced champions year after year.
Unlike many coaches, James doesn’t rely on superstitions, instead focusing on consistent race preparation and unwavering standards. “Never let things slide,” she recalls as the best advice she’s received, and her athletes’ success proves the wisdom of this approach.
Panhandle Pride
The competitive spirit of Texas Panhandle athletics drives James and her program to new heights. “Lots and lots of great athletes and coaches. The Panhandle is very competitive. You have to improve or get run over,” she notes, acknowledging the region’s reputation for excellence.
With supportive administration and great parents backing her program, James maintains her ambitious goals: “In cross country the goal is always to win State.” This mindset, combined with her favorite sports movie “Rudy” playing in the background, continues to inspire new generations of runners.
After 43 years, she’s still relentlessly pursuing excellence, proving that dedication and hard work never go out of style. In a sport where every opponent is tough and every race brings new challenges, Coach James has built more than just a successful program – she’s created a legacy of excellence that extends far beyond the finish line.
