The Texas Panhandle represented well during the State 7-on-7 Football Championships at Veterans Park in College Station on Thursday through Saturday.

Making a second straight appearance, and a third in program history, Dumas once again made a superb run at the tournament. The Demons went 2-1 during Thursday’s pool play beating Rockdale 28-6, followed by a win over Bay City 40-12. Dumas then fell in its final pool play game of the afternoon to Celina in the final seconds 25-19.

During Friday’s championship bracket play, the Demons came out strong by downing Clyde 21-14, then knocked off Columbus 26-21 before their run came to an end at the hands of Hitchcock in the Division II quarterfinals 28-12.

On Saturday, Dumas made the trip to Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene to compete at the State Championship Lineman Challenge. Competing in Division II, the group of Dumas lineman tallied 78 points through 12 events, winning six of those events, to claim the 2022 Lineman Challenge State Championship.

“I’m extremely proud of how the guys competed,” Dumas head football coach Aaron Dunnam said about his lineman. “It’s a true testament to the players and the coaches commitment to the time they invest into the football program. Winning this state title validates all the time and work these guys put in. The focus now goes into July and preparing for the 2022 football season.”

Amarillo High and Hereford made their first appearances at the 7-on-7 championships.

The Sandies had a rough start in a very competitive pool play on Friday going 0-3. AHS fell to College Station 27-20, lost to Coppell 33-15, and then to Houston Lamar 32-21.

During Saturday’s Division I consolation bracket, the Sandies did pick up a victory by beating Austin Westlake 20-14 before falling in the second round to Lake Travis 20-7.

Hereford also struggled in its first time to College Station. The Whitefaces went a combined 0-4 through the Division II pool play and lost in the opening round of bracket action.

At the Division III level, Childress and Stratford were both back at Veterans Park after great showings a year ago. The Bobcats went 2-1 in their pool. Childress lost its opening game to Chilton 20-19, but then rebounded with wins over Henrietta 27-19, and Santa Rosa 25-19. The Bobcats eventually fell in the second round of Friday’s bracket contest to Gunter 20-12.

The Elks also went 2-1 in their pool. Stratford knocked off Miles 14-7 before falling to Lexington 18-6, but then bounced back for a 19-7 victory against Garrison. Stratford eventually lost in the opening round of Friday’s bracket play to San Angelo TLC 21-18.
