Bailey Maupin, Gruver, basketball, Sr.
On the hardwood: It was an incredible week for Maupin, and the No. 1-ranked Gruver Lady Hounds basketball program. Gruver went 4-0 last week defeating Nazareth, 63-47, on Tuesday, then followed that effort up by going 3-0 at the Canyon Tournament with wins over Class 3A defending state champion Brownfield, 52-46, and a double overtime thriller, 49-44, over Class 4A defending champ, Canyon. Maupin was sensational in all four wins averaging 24.7 points a game. The Texas Tech signee poured in 35 against Nazareth, 16 points in a 61-18 victory against Lubbock Trinity, 19 against Brownfield, and 29 points to help beat Canyon, where Maupin played all 40 minutes of the double overtime classic.
Coach Trent Lankford: “Bailey had a tremendous week. We haven’t had our point guard, and our team has had to step up, and Bailey was one of them to do so. Bailey had a laser focus in the Nazareth game. She felt like the team needed her to do that. Then in the Canyon Tournament, she goes out and competes on offense, defense, and in transition. Against Canyon, Bailey was a stud. She played all 40 minutes. I couldn’t be more proud of her and the team for the week we had. We know we’re getting better, but it’s a process. We have plenty to work on right now, but I like how we’re playing.”
Maupin: “It was great to be back on court against really good competition. We love playing teams like that to see where we are overall. I feel like there are some things I can get better at, but as a team we’re getting better each and everyday. That’s all we’re wanting to do right now. It was also cool to have my coach (Krista) Gerlich come watch me in Canyon. Just knowing you have someone coming to watch you, and you’re not even there to play yet speaks volumes of what she is doing for the Lady Raider program.”
