Allex Gonzales, Amarillo High tennis, Jr.
On the court: A key piece for the Amarillo High Sandies run to the school’s first ever state team tennis title, Gonzales was impressive all season long. The junior netter finished the fall season with a 29-1 record in both singles and doubles and went undefeated at the state tournament. In the semifinals her and partner, Karli Lakey, picked up a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 win while Gonzales breezed in singles defeating her opponent from Austin LASA 6-2, 6-1. In the finals against Frisco Centennial, however, is when the junior really shined winning doubles 6-2, 6-2 and making quick work of the opposition in singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Coach Koby Otto: “Allex is the type of player every coach appreciates and is thankful to have in their program. She works hard in practice, competes hard in matches and supports her teammates at all times. She does all this without being told to do so. She gets what it takes be a successful player and a tremendous teammate. Allex was invaluable throughout the entire season and raiser her level of play to an even higher level in the playoffs when it counted the most.”
Gonzales: “Going into the finals I knew we needed to win to get a point and in singles I wanted to get a point quickly to get on and off the court. I feel like my forehand and net play went really well at state. I was able to come in, especially in singles, and finish off the point quickly at the net. With my serves I was able to win some easy points as I only double faulted once the entire tournament. It feels amazing to a be a state champion. We all feel so honored to make school history as the first team to win a team tennis title at Amarillo High. I’ve known all of my teammates since I was really young, and I think we created a good team and culture that helped us win that state championship.”
