Caprock’s Lilliana Rangel is the First United Bank Girls Athlete of the Week.

 Lilliana Rangel, Caprock volleyball, Sr.

On the court: Rangel did everything she could to lead the Caprock Lady Longhorns back to the Class 5A playoffs for a second year in a row.

Down two sets to none to rival Palo Duro in the regular season finale last Tuesday, Rangel and Caprock made a furious rally to win in five-sets, 20-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-14, 15-6.

Rangel, the heart and soul of the Lady Longhorns, had a night she’ll never forget in that victory finishing the game with a triple double as the setter ended the night with a triple-double quarterbacking 42 assists to go with 30 digs and knocked down 16 kills.

On the season, Rangel has handed out 298 assists with 251 digs, 121 kills and 45 aces.

Coach Branda Morales: “It was huge for us to get back to the playoffs. We needed that win over Palo Duro, and we dug deep to get it. Lilianna did a great job of keeping the ball in play for us in that game. She brings a ton of energy to the court. When Lilianna is on, and firing things run pretty well for us. She’s just an amazing player that has a huge passion for volleyball and a great player to coach.”

Rangel “It was big to make it back to the playoffs. We work hard and fight for coach (Branda) Morales. It was hard to play Palo Duro. It was a rivalry, but we have good friends on that team, but we knew we had to win to get into the playoffs. Volleyball is my passion and I try to leave it all on the court every game I play. I didn’t feel like I played well those first two sets but with the help of my teammates that made me push myself. That’s what I love about this team.”
