H.S. Volleyball roundup: AHS takes down Monterey in 3-5A clash; Randall coach Burns earns 100th win

Amarillo High went on the road and passed its first huge test of the District 3-5A season on Saturday.

In a battle for positioning for the top spot in the standings, the Lady Sandies took down No. 6 Lubbock Monterey, 21-25, 25-23, 25-11, 26-24, at the Monterey Gym.

AHS stays perfect in 3-5A improving to 6-0 and 21-11 overall. The victory also sets up another huge match against Bell Street rival and No. 3 Randall at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the AHS Activity Center.

The Lady Plainsman fell a game back at 6-1 and 26-7 overall.

The Lady Sandies actually dropped the first game 21-25, but were able to rally taking the next three. Chelsie Freeman and Lauren Marler dominated the middle. Freeman made a game-high 15 kills followed by Marler’s 14. Senior setter Hannah Shipman earned a double-double with 41 assists and 10 digs.

Burns wins 100th career game as Randall rolls Palo Duro

Randall first year coach Haleigh Burns won her 100th career game as the No. 3 Lady Raiders dropped Palo Duro 25-6, 25-7, 25-12 on Saturday.

Randall (27-3 overall) is 6-0 in District 3-5A and now gets set for a huge showdown with rival Amarillo High for district supremacy at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the AHS Activity Center.

Burns, a West Texas A&M graduate, has won 27 games at Randall and 73 games over four years at Caprock.

Peyton Irwin led Randall with 15 digs and five aces against the Lady Dons.

Lubbock Cooper Sweeps Caprock: The Caprock Lady Longhorns fell behind early and never recovered, falling on the road to Lubbock Cooper, 25-10, 25-20, 25-19, in a key District 3-5A game on Friday.

The Lady Pirates have won two in a row, improving to 3-3 in district and 21-13 overall.

Caprock falls to 3-4 in district and 18-13 overall. The Lady Longhorns also trail Cooper by a half game for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Jenna Patterson led the Lady Pirates with nine kills. Teammate Kate Siegel made 18 digs.

Highland Park, Sanford-Fritch stay perfect: The No. 7 Highland Park Lady Hornets stayed unbeaten in district with a, 25-14 25-12 25-15, sweep of Miami on Friday.

Highland Park is 4-0 in District 4-2A and 23-8 overall. The Lady Hornets get set for a district showdown with rival Sanford-Fritch (19-4, 4-0) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Highland Park Gym.

The typical sister combo of Nevaeah and Cynarah Rodriguez dominated Miami. Nevaeh had a game-high 11 kills to go with 10 digs and four aces. Cynarah followed with eight kills and three aces.

Sanford-Fritch kept pace with the Lady Hornets by sweeping Olton 25-10, 25-13, 25-5. Senior Zoe Fry had 16 kills and four blocks.

Bushland holds off Tascosa: It wasn’t easy, but the No. 1 Bushland Lady Falcons from Class 3A held off a challenge from Tascosa, coming away with a 23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 23-25, 15-8, five-set thriller Saturday at Tascosa.

Bushland (33-1) extends its win streak to 24 straight games.

Tascosa falls to 17-12.

Kinley Rudder of Bushland knocked down 19 kills with four aces and three blocks.

Tascosa’s Aaliyah Hardy dished out 43 assists.

Hereford downs Dumas: For the second time in two weeks Hereford gets a sweep of Dumas. This time the game was in Hereford as the Lady Whitefaces cruised to a 26-24, 25-21, 25-15 victory.

Hereford’s size was imposing with Darcy Dodd and Taytum Stowe combining for 23 kills.

Dumas’ Niki Kent finished with 11 kills.

Hereford is now 20-13 overall while Dumas falls to 13-17.
