The Kendra Potts era is off to a great start for the West Texas A&M volleyball team, wrapping up their nonconference schedule with a 6-1 record.

WT was tested in tournaments but found ways to win with its lone loss coming to No. 4 Washburn at a tournament in Colorado last weekend.

“I feel pretty optimistic overall,” said Potts, who is in her first season as head coach at WT. “We had a hard tournament in Colorado but played well. There are things I want to fix quick but it’s a process. We had some young mistakes against Washburn which could have changed outcome.“

Potts and her team now set focus toward the grueling grind of a new 18-team Lone Star Conference season.

With newly formed league breaking into three divisions, WT will play its division consisting of — Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico, Lubbock Christian, UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico — two times and the members of the other two divisions once.

“It’s here,” Potts said. “You don’t get warm up in playoffs either so lets test ourselves. It doesn’t matter who we play, with a schedule like this every game is important. But with this big of conference, I tell the team not to get far ahead, because if you do it gets overwhelming.”

WT opens LSC play at the WTAMU Fieldhouse against Angelo State at 6 p.m. Friday and Lubbock Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday.
