The recently garnered No. 1-ranking only seem to amp the West Texas A&M men’s basketball team.
There wasn’t a lull or any kind of flat performance to be found despite that massive target put on the Buffs back for the first time in school history. WTAMU rolled over No. 4 Dallas Baptist 93-79 on Thursday then followed that with a 68-52 victory against UT Tyler on Saturday.
The Buffs are red-hot pushing their win streak to 15 straight as they now move to 18-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in Lone Star Conference play.
Thursday night saw one of the better regular season crowds the First United has had since opening the building over 20 years. Thanks to a passionate fanbase along with a tremendous student section, the FUB was rocking with 3,500 fans making life difficult for the Patriots.
WTAMU jumped out to a 45-36 halftime lead. DBU didn’t go away cutting the deficit 57-53, but the Buffs put the game away going on a late 16-0 run to put the Patriots away.
Senior guard Zach Toussaint made history in the win Thursday. On top of scoring 13 points, Toussaint played in his 141st career game at WTAMU setting the all-time record for games played previously held by Buff great Ryan Quaid set in 2019.
It was just the start of a strong weekend for WTAMU forward Larry Wise who poured in a game-high 23 points against DBU. Teammate Ahamed Mohammed added 15 and Brock Mishak chipped in with 14 points.
The Buffs shot 33-of-58 (56.5 percent) from the floor and 40 percent (8-of-20) from beyond the arc.
WTAMU and Wise carried momentum into Saturday with a 68-52 thumping of UT Tyler. Following his 23-point outing against DBU, Wise posted a game-high 23 points on 6-of-13 shooting but a perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the charity stripe.
Kieran Elliott finished with 11 points and two steals and Mohammed ended the day with a team-high six rebounds.
