Palo Duro and Amarillo High had impressive showings at the West Texas A&M Boys Showcase Soccer Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Dons claimed the championship over Amarillo High by goal differential, going 3-0 with convincing wins over Dumas 6-0, Graham, 6-1, and Canyon 10-0.
Junior standout Jaime Carillo was masterful in the three wins for Palo Duro (10-1-2) as the striker scored nine goals with five assists during the three wins. Carrillo won the Golden Boot award for his performance. Teammate Jaime Martinez was also added to the All-Tournament team with Carrillo scoring three goals.
Amarillo High was also 3-0 in the tournament with wins against Graham, 10-0, Lubbock-Cooper by a 1-0 count, and then a 2-0 blanking of Dumas on Saturday. In the three shutouts, Sandies goalie Jack Wetzel earned the Golden Gloves honor for not allowing a goal in 240 minutes of game action.
