Randall boys dominate to win Region I-5A Tournament; Caprock girls place third

The Randall boys wrestling team left everyone in the dust Saturday afternoon at the Region I-5A Wrestling Tournament in El Paso.

Randall piled up 261 points, which was more than 120 points better than second place Dumas, that totaled 140.5.

The Raiders took over in the finals, finishing with a Texas Panhandle-best five Region I-5A individual champions, and advancing eight total individuals to state.

Andres Mendoza got Randall started by winning the 120 pound weight class. Moses Torres followed by taking gold in the 145, then Greg Dean claimed the 152 pound title and Branson Britten wrapped up the Raiders stellar day by winning gold in the 170 pound weight class.

Amarillo High’s Jeff Jackson is headed back to the UIL Class 5A state tournament for a fourth straight year. Jackson defended his 220 pound regional crown defeating Jeremiah Norris from El Paso Parkland by an 8-3 decision.

Dumas junior Ah Lee Yart was the other region champion, winning the 132 pound class.

On the girls side, the Caprock team placed third with 112 points. El Paso Eastwood won the team title racking up 162.

Five Caprock girls are headed to state. Those include — Audree Garcia (95 pounds), Vanessa Macedo (110), Tatiana Garcia (119), Coleby Velasquez (128) and Vienna Barbosa (165).

Palo Duro’s Jadyn Cordova won gold in the 102 pound weight class to advance, as did Bushland’s Norma Saloman in the 285 pound class.

Region I-6A recap

Tascosa qualified three wrestlers to the UIL Class 6A meet.

Mia Diaz highlighted the tournament by winning the 95 pound regional championship thanks to beating Chalimar Rodriguez of Keller Timber Kreek via pin fall in 1:46.

On the boys side, both Aden Zamora (106 pound) and Aaron Trevizio (152 pound) each placed fourth to qualify.

The UIL state wrestling tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at the Berry Center in Cypress.
