The high school soccer season got into full swing as girls’ teams faced the elements at the properly named West Texas A&M Winter Freeze Tournament on The Pitch at WTAMU from Thursday through Saturday.
The Randall Lady Raiders (3-1-1) had a strong showing finishing runner-up falling to Lubbock Coronado 2-1 in a very competitive match on Saturday afternoon.
Randall went 3-1 over the three days with wins over Caprock, 2-0, followed by another shutout of Lubbock-Cooper Liberty, 4-0, then blanked Burkburnett 2-0 before losing to the Lady Mustangs.
Lady Raider goalie Jani Contreras was impressive during tournament play totaling three shutouts with 30 combined saves while teammate Kyndal McClain tallied two goals over the four games.
The Palo Duro Lady Dons clinched the Silver Bracket championship on Saturday by defeating rival Caprock, 3-0. The Lady Dons are off to a 3-1 start in 2024.
Yahaira Martinez netted a hattrick scoring all three goals in the victory with Brenda Zepeda Aguilar dishing out a pair of assists. Goalie Mia Payan was stellar in net grabbing 11 saves in the win.
Borger earned the Bronze championship by defeating Lubbock-Liberty 2-0.
West Plains wins Battle of the Backbone championshipÂ
The West Plains Lady Wolves picked up where they left off after an amazing inaugural season in 2023.
The Lady Wolves (4-2 overall) went a perfect 4-0 to claim the Battle of the Backbone championship in Wimberly on Saturday.
West Plains opened the tournament by handling Mercedes 8-0, then knocked off Gonzales 6-1. The Lady Wolves blanked Marble Falls in the semifinals 4-0 and wrapped up the title by holding off McAllen Rowe 2-1.
Trinity Fernandez had an outstanding tournament for West Plains totaling five goals with a pair of assists. Mel Lujan had five assists in a win over Mercedes and six for the weekend. Goalie Bella Hawley earned two shutouts making eight saves while allowing only two goals over four games.
