It was a very prominent day one of the University Interscholastic League Region I Cross Country Meet for Texas Panhandle teams at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
The Tascosa boys and Randall girls teams highlighted the Region I-5A race with each qualifying for the UIL Class 5A state meet at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on Nov. 23.
The Rebels, dropping from Class 6A this season, are making their first appearance to state for the first time since 2011 with a third place finish. Tascosa tallied 94 points, while regional champion Grapevine won with 54.
DJ Guerrero was the Rebels lone top 10 finisher placing sixth with a time of 16:43.20.
Amarillo High’s Isaac McGill had a great showing placing second overall, punching his ticket as an individual. McGill clocked a 16:21.00 which was runner up to individual champion Isaac Alonzo (16:02.40) of Lubbock High.
Sandies runner Miles Cox came in 13th place, and will qualify as an individual.
On the girls side, Randall is state bound. The Lady Raiders (63 points) took third behind Grapevine and regional champion, Colleyville Heritage (38 points).
Randall was able to hold off Bell Street rival Amarillo High thanks to the strong running of Ariyah Gomez, Romie Rubio, and Sierra Sanchez. The junior Gomez will make her second appearance at state thanks to third place individual mark of 20:03.20. Rubio came in at fifth pacing a 20:19.50, and Sanchez (20:25:10) was seventh.
Though AHS finished fourth, coming one spot from advancing as a team, the Lady Sandies are sending a total of five individuals — Catalina Purcell, Brooke Latham, Alexis Escobedo, Jewel Baer and Emma Milsow — to the Class 5A state meet.

Region I-3A

The Spearman girls are headed to the UIL Class 3A state cross country meet for the first time since 2011, when they were in the midst of a dynasty winning four state titles from 2008-2011.
The Lynxettes punched their ticket with a second place finish at the Region I-3A meet on Monday morning at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
Spearman (109 points) finished runner up behind regional champion Holliday team, which had 40 points.
Freshman runner Braylan Lusby, the District 1-3A champion, had an impressive showing placing second individually by clocking 12:56.90. Teammate Mia Pipkin (13:33.10) earned a 10th place finish.
Qualifying to the state meet as individuals were Friona’s Yvonne Legaretta. Legaretta took fifth with a time of 13:02.70. Clarissa Gamboa (13:50.30) of Childress also advanced.
On the boys side, Friona’s Adrian Legaretta, Friona, River Road’s Crawford Kiser and Canadian’s Rylun Clark all placed in the top 10.
Legaretta placed third running a 17:33.20, Kiser (17:39.10) will make his second straight trip to state thanks to a sixth place finish, and Clark took 10th pacing a 17:48.20.
Ethan Ramos of Spearman and Dimmitt’s Jordan Garcia also advanced.

Region I-1A
The Nazareth girls cross country team won the Region I-1A championship Monday in Lubbock. [Provided photo]For an eighth straight year the Nazareth girls cross country team will compete at the UIL Class 1A state meet in Round Rock.
The Swiftettes dominated the competition at the Region I-1A meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock scoring 42 points, which was 63 points better than second place Spur (105).
Highlighting the banner morning for Nazareth runner Emma Kleman. The decorated senior was the runner up running a 12:22.00. Taytum Goodman of Springlake-Earth was the individual champion with an impressive 11:30.20.
Kleman will make a fourth straight appearance to the state meet. She was the Class 1A state champion as a freshman, earned third her sophomore year and came in ninth as a junior last season. Teammates Presley Wheeler (13:39.20) and Kyanne Dunn (13:42.10) joined Kleman in the top 10, finishing seventh and eighth.
Claude’s Aubrie Brannon and Renee Fouquet also qualified.
Texline’s Stratton Potter was the story during the boys race Monday. Potter clocked a 18:29.40 to place third. Alex Acevedo, Silverton, Caleb Homfeld of Miami and Hartley’s Daniel Quevedo will join Potter at state as individual qualifiers.
