Randall survives and advances past Brock

Randall is headed back to the Region I championship for a third straight year but it wasn’t easy by any means.

The Raiders saw a 14-point halftime lead disapate in a flash but were able to survive and advance holding off Brock 70-66 for a thrilling double overtime win Monday in a Class 4A Division II regional semifinal at the Scurry County Coliseum in Snyder.

The Raiders are one game away from a third straight state semifinal. To make that happen, Randall (31-5) will have to get past Krum (25-9) in a Region I Division II championship game at 6 p.m. on Friday in Childress. Krum overcame a 15-point third quarter deficit on Tuesday night to defeat upset-minded Pampa 56-48.

The Raiders had a great start against the Eagles (28-9) on Monday going up 21-13 after one and 38-24 at the break. The second half was a different story. Brock stole the momentum chasing down Randall to force overtime tied 54-54. The Eagles then got a late bucket to force double overtime tied, 62-62. In the second OT, Randall was able to pull away and get the four-point victory.

Tayesen Combs paced Randall with a team-best 22 points. Jaxon Tonioli followed with 18 and Dawson Heider added 11.

Gruver decimates Miles

It was another night at the office for the Gruver Greyhounds, who had no issues getting by Miles 76-44 in a UIL Class 2A Division II regional semifinal matchup Tuesday night at Shallowater.

The Greyhounds shot lights out in the first half scoring 44 points to take a 44-28 halftime lead. Gruver kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter never allowing Miles back in the game. The Greyhounds also used a very balanced attack to earn this win placing five players in double figures. Jett Pittman had a game-high 15 points with Mason Lankford, Stephen Cowan and Brock Butler all finishing with 13. Teammate Briggs Satterfield rounded out the scoring with 10.

Gruver (19-1) is now set for a big-time showdown with New Home (30-5) in the regional championship at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night at the Joe Lombard Gymnasium in Canyon.

Wildorado and Valley will collide in regional finals

In a regional tournament type feel, Wildorado and Valley are destined to square off for the Region I-1A Division I championship after getting big wins in front a packed house at Dimmitt on Tuesday night.

Wildorado opened a showcase doubleheader blowing out Crosbyton 67-40 to win the Class 1A Division regional semifinal title.

The Mustangs galloped out to a 24-5 first quarter advantage and never looked back. Hunter Corman had a huge night for Wildorado scoring 17 of his game-high 31 points in the first half. Teammate Braddek Darnell was superb as well scoring 11 points.

Valley followed taking on a Happy in the night cap in a matchup that lived up to the billing. The Patriots used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Cowboys earning a 42-34 victory.

Happy (23-8) led throughout most of the game. The Cowboys were up 19-15 after the first, then up 24-21 at half and 28-25 entering the fourth and final quarter. However, the Patriots got hot while Happy went cold as Valley went on an 11-0 run to open the final stanza taking a 36-28 lead that was more than enough to lead the Patriots to the victory.

The brother duo of Kanyon and Korbin Taylor set the tone for Valley combining for 23 points. Kanyon had a team-high 13 with Korbin adding 10.

Valley (32-3) is now set to face Wildorado (25-6) for the Region I-1A Division I championship at a time and place to be determined.

Texline and Nazareth set to rekindle rivalry

With both Nazareth and Texline getting victories on Tuesday night, the Swifts and Tornadoes are set to rekindle a tremendous playoff rivalry over the years for the Region I-1A Division II title.

Texline and Nazareth were both dominant in its respective regional semifinal matchups Tuesday with Texline hammering Lorenzo 76-53 and the Swifts locking down Loop 63-47.

The Tornadoes (30-6) and Swifts (23-11) are now set to do battle in what’s become one of the better rivalries across the Texas Panhandle in the Region I-1A Division II title game at 6 p.m. Friday in Bushland.

During the win against Lorenzo, Texline’s Joe Clay and Rett Wann combined for 30 points. Wann hit five 3-pointers for his 15 points as Clay also scored 15.

In Nazareth’s blowout victory of Loop, Caysen High registered 20 points with Kayle Rogers pouring in 17.
