Dimmitt downs Bushland in OT thriller

Fans sure got their money’s worth in Tuesday’s Class 3A area round game between Bushland and Dimmitt at the Tascosa Activity Center.

But only Dimmitt got to keep playing at the end of the night.

Dimmitt’s Kobe Carpio made a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left in overtime to give the Bobcats a 62-61 victory. That gave Dimmitt (14-10) a spot in the region quarterfinals against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Shallowater and Lamesa at a time, date and place to be determined.

For the second straight postseason game Bushland (19-5) went to overtime. But unlike last week’s bidistrict win over Tulia, the Falcons didn’t live to play another day.

Dimmitt led for most of regulation and held a 28-23 halftime lead, as neither team led by double digits. The Bobcats led by as many as 13 in the third quarter but Bushland closed the period with seven straight points to cut it to 40-34.

Bushland kept chipping away in the fourth quarter and twice held the lead in the final two minutes of regulation before it ended tied at 53 to force overtime.

The Falcons took the lead with 25 seconds left in OT on Brody Sutterfield’s basket to make it 61-60. Dimmitt missed twice in the waning seconds, but Carpio grabbed on offensive rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws for the winning points.

Acqtavian Baty had a game-high 20 points for Dimmitt while Carpio scored 14 and C.J. Willey added 12. Nathan Welch led Bushland with 18 points, Clayton Seales scored 14 and Sutterfield had 13.

Randall falls to Ysleta

In a very tight-knit game throughout, but it just wasn’t meant to be for the Randall Raiders as they fell short to El Paso Ysleta 59-56 in a Class 5A area round matchup Tuesday night in Seminole.

The Raiders see a fantastic season end at 22-4 overall, while Ysleta (16-4) advances to play rival El Paso Chapin (19-1) in the regional quarterfinal.

Randall led 33-28 at half only to see the Indians cut the deficit 45-43 by the end of the third. Down the stretch in the fourth, Ysleta rallied outscoring the Raiders 16-11 in the final eight minutes.

Despite the loss, Kainan Thomas led Randall with 16 points. Aaron Ovalle chipped in 14.
