Thursday’s games

Class 5A

Lubbock Estacado (2-0) at Palo Duro (1-1), 7 p.m.
It’s Ziggy Hood Night for the Dons as they attempt to knock Estacado from the unbeaten ranks. Bottom line, if the Dons want one of the latest Panhandle Sports Hall of Famers inductees (Ziggy, a PD assistant coach) to leave Dick Bivins happy it must halt Mats junior running back Bobby Ross. I believe PD is a future playoff team, but Ross is a hoss. … Estacado 35, Palo Duro 21

Class 4A

Snyder (2-0) at Randall (1-1), 7 p.m.
These two teams’ figures to provide an important test for each other. Randall gave new coach Dan Sherwood his first win with a big offensive performance in a 50-23 win at Clovis, N.M. and Snyder has shut out its first two opponents by lopsided margins. A short week and being at home will help the Raiders give Sherwood his first home win at Happy State Bank Stadium in a competitive game. … Randall 26, Snyder 21

Class 1A

McLean JV at Darrouzett (0-2), 6 p.m.
This will be a close one, but you have to go with the varsity squad in this one. …Darrouzett 46, McLean JV 36

Booker (2-0) vs. Amherst (2-0) at Wildorado, 7 p.m.
Kiowa country is excited about this new brand of football and the winning that comes with it. However, Amherst is a top 10 team that will be the biggest challenge yet for Booker. …Amherst 72, Booker 66

Lefors (0-2) at Follett (0-2), 7 p.m.
Stinging from a close loss to Happy last week, the Panthers won’t be gracious hosts to a Pirate team still trying to take that next step. …Follett 60, Lefors 14

Claude (1-1) at Borden County (2-0), 7:30 p.m.
Last year the Mustangs stayed close with the Coyotes before Borden County ran away a 45-point victory. Anybody who plays in Gail knows the friendly confines of Coyote Stadium aren’t so friendly to the opposing team. …Borden County 56, Claude 18

Friday’s games

Class 5A

Caprock (0-2) at Pampa (1-1), 7 p.m.
Caprock is hungrier for a W than a high school senior standing at the fridge ready to pounce. Pampa, meanwhile, has to rebound from an offensive struggle against Plainview. Won’t be a walk in the park, but Caprock’s gets Coach Rowdy Freeman his first varsity W. … Caprock 31, Pampa 17

Tascosa (1-1) at Odessa Permian (1-1), 7 p.m.
Permian opened eyes across the state in Week 1 getting torched by Class 5A Abilene High, 41-14. Tascosa had an eye-opening loss last week allowing Midland Legacy 63 points. Young Tascosa certainly can win this game, but playing Permian at Ratliff is never easy under the Friday Night Lights. … Permian 26, Tascosa 20

Midland High (2-0) at Amarillo High (1-1), 7 p.m.
My, my, look at what those Sandies pulled off last week beating four-time defending New Mexico state champion Cleveland. And, in comeback fashion. What a coaching job by Chad Dunnam and his staff. Midland High put a hurt on Lubbock Coronado last week and average cranking out 43.5 points per game in its two wins. I think AHS has the defense and just enough offense to hold off Midland at home. … AHS 31, Midland 28

– Lance Lahnert
Last week: 2-1 (.666)
Season: 4-1 (.800)

Class 4A

Canyon (2-0) vs. West Plains (1-1), 7 p.m.
Two Canyon ISD teams will square off for the second time in history in what promises to be a compelling rivalry. Both schools have been putting lots of points on the scoreboard, as Canyon has 85 points in two games and upstart West Plains has 100. West Plains has done so against slightly tougher competition, so the Wolves will get their first win in this rivalry. … West Plains 35, Canyon 28

Perryton (0-2) at Dumas (0-2), 7 p.m.
Both of these longtime non-district rivals desperately need a win just to get going in the right direction. Dumas has faced a tough schedule in losing to a pair of Lubbock area schools and Perryton has cracked 30 points both times in a pair of losses. Perryton quarterback Julian Cervantes has sort of flown under the radar, but he’ll get his first win of the season in a mild upset. … Perryton 29, Dumas 28

Hereford (2-0) at Shallowater (0-2), 7 p.m.
Speaking of quarterback play, Hereford’s Kalub Ramirez has lived up to the preseason hype as the Whitefaces have already doubled their win total from all of last season. Shallowater is off to an uncharacteristic slow start and looking to get in a winning groove at home. It won’t happen against the Herd, who are making a statement of their own. … Hereford 35, Shallowater 20

Lamesa (0-2) at Borger (1-1), 7 p.m.
Borger got its first win under new coach Dane Hamrick by shutting out River Road, so surprise since Hamrick was the defensive coordinator. Struggling Lamesa will face a big enough obstacle with the road trip alone after opening the season with a pair of lopsided losses. The Bulldogs will take advantage of this one to get better and notch another win. … Borger 40, Lamesa 6

– Lee Passmore
Last week: 5-1 (.833)
Season: 8-5 (.615)

Class 3A

Bushland (1-1) at Childress (2-0), 7 p.m.
Neither team has shied away from strong competition to open the 2023 campaign. The Bobcats have had two very hard-fought wins so far while the Falcons are hoping to bounce back from their first loss of the year at Canadian. This game comes down to the Childress defense. … Bushland 38, Childress 20

Dalhart (2-0) at Spearman (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Golden Wolves have been a nice surprise thanks to a 2-0 start. If Spearman can’t find a way to slowdown QB Kyler Read, it could be a long night for the Lynx. … Dalhart 33, Spearman 22

Muleshoe (2-0) at Friona (0-1), 7 p.m.
Here’s a long-standing rivalry between two towns separated by only 29 miles off Highway 214. The Mules are gaining more and more attention by the week. The Chieftains are a team wanting to prove they are much better than the opener against Panhandle showed. … Muleshoe 35, Friona 21

Wellington (1-1) at River Road (0-2), 7 p.m.
Don’t expect to see the ball in the air in a battle of two teams that love to run the football. The Skyrockets firepower maybe a little too much for the Wildcats. … Wellington 36, River Road 14

Elk City, Okla. (2-0) at Canadian (2-0), 7 p.m.
The Wildcats turned a lot of heads with their dominating win over Bushland last week. Elk City is a very physical team that can ground and pound the football and beat Canadian last season. This year, Canadian sees Elks coming. … Canadian 42, Elk City 14

Sanford-Fritch (0-2) at Tulia (0-2), 7 p.m.
This is a matchup between two teams looking for their first win. The Eagles will do their best to keep the ball away from the Hornets, but Tulia prevails. … Tulia 27, Fritch 18

– Kale Steed
Last week: 4-1 (.800)
Season: 8-4 (.666)

Class 2A

Dimmitt (0-2) at Sunray (1-1), 7 p.m.
Sunray can light up the scoreboard in a hurry in this battle of Bobcats. … Sunray 48, Dimmitt 13

Highland Park (2-0) at Shamrock (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Hornets hit the road for the first time this year. This is a long road trip and Shamrock is a tough place to play. This should be a good one. … Highland Park 26, Shamrock 23

Farwell (2-0) at Sundown (1-1), 7 p.m.
Keep an eye on the Steers who are playing really good football to start the season. If the Roughnecks don’t slowdown running back Corey Stancell, Sundown could be in serious trouble. … Farwell 34, Sundown 19

Panhandle (2-0) at Vega (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Panthers have made this sportswriter look very foolish the past couple of weeks. I’m starting to buy into what head coach Dane Ashley and his team is doing. QB Broxton Robinson is the real deal. … Panhandle 39, Vega 13

Stratford (2-0) at Gruver (2-0), 7 p.m.
The Elks have owned this rivalry in dominating fashion of late. First-year Gruver head coach Kurt Haburther hopes to break that trend, but it will be up the Greyhound defense trying to anything they can to stop QB Bryce Braden. … Stratford 36, Gruver 15

West Texas High (1-1) at Boys Ranch (0-2), 7 p.m.
Both teams are coming off tough losses in Week 2. The Roughriders have seemed to have found a spark with freshman signal caller Isaac Acosta. Let’s take Boys Ranch in a close one. … Boys Ranch 22, WT High 20

Roscoe (1-0) at Clarendon (0-2), 7 p.m., at Tyer Stadium, Floydada
The Broncos break into the win column for the first time this season. … Clarendon 28, Roscoe 21

Ralls (1-1) at Memphis (0-2), 7 p.m.
The Cyclones will compete, but will they have enough to compete with the Jackrabbits in the end. … Ralls 34, Memphis 20

Wheeler (0-2) at Guymon, Okla. (2-0), 7 p.m.
It’s been a very rough start for Wheeler which is still trying to find consistency on offense. … Guymon 29, Wheeler 13

Bovina (1-1) at Lubbock Christian (2-0), 7 p.m.
Bovina is a gritty team that will have to play with everything they have against a top TAPPS team like the Eagles, who boast a very talented QB in Welker Horn. … Lubbock Christian 28, Bovina 14

– Kale Steed
Last week: 8-5 (.615)
Season: 16-8 (.666)

Class 1A

San Jacinto Christian (1-1) at McLean (1-1), 7 p.m.
Last week the Tigers had to deal with the best player in Six-Man football in Grayson Rigdon. This week they welcome an improving Patriots team but one that won’t be the caliber of Benjamin. After two straight tough games, McLean will find home cooking tasty. …McLean 62, San Jacinto 18

Wildorado (1-1) at Miami (2-0), 7 p.m.
After two straight blowouts for Miami to start the season, the Warriors get to face the best player they have seen so far in the Mustangs Aden Woodard. Unfortunately, that won’t be enough to overtake the home team. …Miami 56, Wildorado 13

Amarillo PCHEA (1-1) at White Deer (1-1), 7 p.m.
The “dirty dozen” grabbed their first victory of the season last week and winning is contagious. Make it two in a row for head coach Justin Rucker’s group. …White Deer 52, Amarillo PCHEA 6

Springlake-Earth (2-0) at Happy (1-1), 7 p.m.
Arguably the best game of the night takes place at the Cowboy Corral on Homecoming night. Which Cowboys team shows up will decide this one as the Wolverines are full of confidence and looking to end a two-game losing streak to Happy. This one will likely be decided in the final minute as the Cowboys start to look more like the team that had so much preseason hype. …Happy 52, Springlake-Earth 46

Hedley (0-2) at Vernon Northside (2-0), 7:30 p.m.
Another matchup of equal teams but the experience of the Indians will be too much for the Owls. …Vernon Northside 38, Hedley 24

Groom (1-1) at Nazareth (1-1), 7:30 p.m.
Both of these teams look way different than a year ago as they try new faces if different positions getting ready for district action. The size of the Swifts will be the difference. …Nazareth 46, Groom 27

Valley (1-1) at Whiteface (2-0), 7:30 p.m.
For the third straight week Valley gets a quality opponent and likely the best of who they have played. To beat the Antelopes on the road they will have to withstand the physical play of Whiteface and avoid mistakes. …Whiteface 45, Valley 20

Silverton (2-0) at Whitharral (1-1), 7:30 p.m.
A year ago the Owls stunned the state by upsetting Whitharral at home. Shamadrick Weaver has graduated which leaves Sawyer Francis as the best player on the field. If Silverton can withstand the initial onslaught from the Panthers, the Owls will walk away with a victory over the No. 4-ranked team in D-II. …Silverton 52, Whitharral 45

– Craig Sperry
Last Week: 9-3 (.750)
Season: 18-6 (.750)
